Deadlifts

I seem to remember throughout my youth in the 1980s hearing about dead-lifts, and how damned great they are. Does anyone still do them? What are they good for? How do you do them safely?
Thank you.

I really like them. They are a highly effective compound movement that hits the legs and much of the upper body. They can build alot of mass and functional strength. There was a study done in a sports physiology journal that evaluated the relationship of strength, conditioning, and athletic performance to the maxs of several compound lifts. The strongest correlation and most predictive was the deadlift. The deadlift does require good form. I would start with low weight and gradually work up. For form hints, books are a good place to begin. Also videos of the lift in action can be helpful and can be found a several sites--use google to pin them down.

I'm going to second what Buffdoc is talking about. Deadlifts can be a very good tool in building overall size and strength. I've done deadlifts on and off for some time and as long as they are performed correctly I would imagine you can avoid the back strain that some experience.

Bench Press, Squats, Deadlifts--the big three, Use them and you will be the big one!

Brent, I still do deadlifts (on an alternating basis) but I use the girard(sp?) bar. It a bar that looks like a diamond or triangular shape where you step inside the bar. It's a bit easier to manage than a straight bar and somewhat safer. Deadlifts are a great exercise and I continue the endorsement of others on this thread.

So, a bunch of positive results, in very little time. Seems like it's a favorite, and I haven't done one in over 15 years (thus I forget how to do them etc.) I will defiantly look into them. Thank you all!

I started doing deadlifts for the first time in January of this year. I'm paranoid about seriously injurying myself, especially with my knees and back, so I hired a trainer. It took a little while for me to find one who has a competitive powerlifting background. We spent several sessions going over my form and technique for deadlifting in addition to bench press and squats.

So far, I'm making slow progress. I typically start my back workouts with deadlifts: 5x135, 5x225, 2-3x315 and 1-2x315. I'm not lifting heavy enough (for me) to need a belt, and I don't use straps for my grip. At 315 I start losing my grip strength after a few reps. The trainer thought I could easily hit 405 for reps with the deadlift. I have yet to come close to his prediction.

You'll do it Traveller. And, from what I've heard, it's a good idea to stay off the belt and straps as long as is safely possible, to make sure you're building strength in your lower back and forearms. My forearms are starting to get some wicked development from deadlifts and chin ups without the strap, and even though my grip is the limiting factor, I'm still seeing improvement all over my back, and even in my hamstrings.

I cannot recommend deadlifts enough...they're practically a miracle movement. But, like everyone else has said, form is critical.

Belts & staps

In different weightlifting classes I've taken, I've been banned from using straps & belts to work on form. After I while you'll use weight that's so heavy you may need them, but first you need to cement good form into your workout & not depend on a belt doing the work for you.

belts,straps...

never used straps.i hope everyone is familiar with the powelifter grip for deadlifts(one palm forewards, one back)keeps the bar from turning in your hands.belts can actually cause injuries.whether you realise it or not,you push your abdominal wall against to jack up your back.encourages hernias.i currently use a belt;because if i didn't,i wouldn't have any waist at all.

Now I feel stupid

Today was back day for my husband & I, so I asked a trainer to show me how to do Dead-lifts. Guess what? I've already been doing them, but didn't know the name. Made me feel really smart.

Oh well. At least I got a good refresher on my form...

Yesterday morning when I hit 315 for my deadlifts, my first set at that weight consisted of 2 reps. before my overhand grip failed. I switched to an alternating grip that helped me do 3 reps. for my second set, and 4 reps. on my third set. I guess I could have done more but I wanted to take it easy. I just finished working through the night (12-hr. work day) and hadn't slept yet.

Next time I deadllift, I'm finally going to wear gloves. My calluses on my hands are getting too rough.

315 lbs. is great! I hope to be there one day, and I think calluses are sexy.

I had a complaint about my calluses being too abrasive on the body (or certain part) of someone I dated. Thinking back, however, I remember his bitching (whining) wore on my nerves.

Traveller, I have a crazy feeling that anyone here would not be satisfied with anyone that would bitch about calluses. My husband thinks mine are sexy, and I like that about him: he likes men, not sissies. I understand being bitchy for fun with friends, but that's different.
