Aisle 13: Jake and Andy (Part 2)

Jake took Andy to Earl's, the all night diner on the other side of campus from Andy's dorm.

"I've heard about this place..." Andy said.

"But didn't really imagine it was all they said it was?" Jake asked.

Andy just nodded.

It was a Country Western extravaganza, with red checked table cloths, Mason jars for drinks, waitresses who appeared to have stepped right out of Mel's Diner, CW memorabilia everywhere.

"Crazy," Andy said.

"Check out the table legs," Jake said, pointing to the end of the table.

"Jeans!" Andy exclaimed. "And cowboy boots!"

Jake nodded.

"A different pair for each booth."

Jake gave some suggestions to Andy on what to order, then gave his order to Nell, who appeared to be 80 if she was a day.

"Mmm hmm, mmm hmmm, mmm hmm, mmm hmm," Nell said as Jake rattled off an order that went on and on. The longer Jake rattled, the bigger Andy's eyes got.

"Baby darlin', is that ALL?" Nell asked, somewhat miffed.

Andy just gaped.

"Maybe some more later, Miz Nell, I had a big lunch," Jake said.

Jake chuckled when he got a look at the expression on Andy's face.

"I guess you could say I'm a growin' boy," Jake allowed.

Andy spluttered.

"Jeezus, Mist.., um, I mean, Jake, just how much DO you weigh?"

Jake laughed.

"I'm trimming down a bit right now, I've got some traveling to do this semester and any bigger than this I have trouble with the seats."

Andy's mouth was in serious danger of falling open again.

"295 this morning, kid," Jake said. "That's about 20-25 lbs. less than my max off season weight."

Andy's eyes closed and a giant shudder shook the handsome young man from head to toe.

"Awww, Jeez," Andy said. "I don't believe this..."

It was Jake's turn to gawp.

"Really? Again?!"

Andy, abashed, nodded his head. Jake gave him his killer smile once again.

"Man, kid, what I'd give for that kinda testosterone," Jake laughed, then reached across the table to push Andy's chin back into place.

Slowly, Andy shook his head back and forth.

"You're just incredible," he told Jake. "You fucking weigh twice as much as I do!"

Jake shrugged his shoulders.

"Don't do that, please!" Andy whispered fiercely. "I can't take it any more!"

Jake spread his arms along the back side of the booth.

"There," he said. "That better? And, ya know, yeah, I figured I weighed twice as much as you do but I'm twice as old as you are, too!"

Andy blinked.

"What? You think I'm 14?"

Jake guffawed.

"Shit no, kid, I think you're 19 or 20 and I'm twice that."

Andy pondered that.

"Really? I'm 18. So you're 36? I'd never have guessed."

Jake tugged on his ear. Seeing Jake's massive forearm bunch up while he did it nearly sent Andy over the edge again.

"Uh, well, no," Jake replied. "I turned 40 last month..."

Andy's eyes tried to bug out of his head.

"Get out!"

Jake just laughed.

"Well, OK, but let me pay for dinner, alright? I mean, I thought I might be too old for you but..."

Andy threw his dinner roll at Jake, who caught it with a great deal more speed and dexterity than Andy would have given a man his size credit for.

Then the food arrived and they got down to eating and talking about what was what. Jake found out that Andy was just starting at State, on full academic scholarship but not really sure what he wanted to major in, although he was a bit of a science geek. Andy was dumbfounded to find out that not only was Jake an alum, he had a Ph.D. in molecular biophysics from Penn.

"I'm only newly back in town, too," Jake said. "I keep trying to get away but I really love it here and they keep luring me back."

Andy gave him the eye.

"Who does?"

Jake grinned.

"In this case, Proteus Genomics," Jake said, referring to State's high tech genetic engineering spin off.

"Oh, cool," Andy said. "I've heard of them. What do you do there?"

Jake cleared his throat.

"Promise you won't laugh?"

As if, Andy thought to himself.

"President and CEO," Jake said in a soft voice.

"Holy crap," Andy said. "You're huge, handsome, hot, smart, AND you make a lot of money?"

Jake had the decency to blush.

"Well, I guess when you put it that way..."

Andy looked at Jake with an intensity that was almost unnerving, even for a man as intimidatingly large and self-confident as Jake.

"I want to be you!" Andy said. "It's that simple!"

Jake smiled.

"Well, ya know...."

Andy interrupted him.

"Oh, I know, I know. You're you and I'm me and I can't lead your life. But you ARE everything I want to be some day."

Jake gave the younger man an appraising glance.

"I have no reason to think you can't have it all," Jake told him, seriously. "You've got the looks. From what I can tell, you've got the potential for putting on lots of mass. And God knows you've got the brains, that's obvious."

Andy sighed.

"You're just saying..."

Jake interrupted him.

"No, Andy, I'm not just saying -- I'm completely serious."

Just then Nell showed up.

"What next?" she asked.

Andy looked at Jake.

Jake looked at Andy.

"What indeed?"

They both said it at the same time.
