"What's the occasion?"

"Can't I take my girlfriend out to a nice restaurant without an ulterior motive?"

"You can." She swirled her cabernet. "But you don't."

"Okay. I wanted to ask you something. Remember Robert from work?"

"The big guy?"

"Yeah. We've been hanging out lately."

"Isn't he like ten years older than you?"

"Hmm, nine? I think he's thirty-three. What, am I not allowed to have older friends?"

"No, it's fine, just thought it was weird."

"You have older friends."

"Name one."

"Margot. She has to be ten years older than you."

"She's two years older than me."

"Oh. She looks great."

Julie scowled.

"Well anyway, Robert wants me to work out with him. He says even though I'm skinny I've got a great frame."

"You do have wide shoulders."

"That's what he said! I could hold a lot of muscle. So, you know, I was thinking about doing it."

"Darren! Stop biting your nails. This is a fancy place."

"Sorry."

"Are you asking permission to start a new hobby?"

"No, but, you know I don't get into stuff lightly."

"You mean like the brewing equipment in the basement that puts Stone to shame? Or the nine electric guitars that you can't possibly play all of?"

"Eleven, and I play every one of them."

"Mm hmm. Darren, I've never complained about you being obsessive before."

"I'm not obsessive."

"I've never complained about your dedication before."

"I know. I appreciate that. But this will affect you. It'll change my schedule, my diet, my lifestyle. I'll ask you to change up your cooking and help me track my progress. Robert says it's a lot of work. But the upside is I'll be sexy."

"You're sexy now."

Darren smiled.

Julie drained her glass and imagined some muscle on her skinny boyfriend. "I think you should do it."
