WOO HOO! He didn't shrink! Or did he??? No, he couldn't have. Or could he??? No, the author wouldn't do that. Or would he???

I like the reference to Flowers for Algernon. Very appropriate. Interesting that Alex is more worried about regressing mentally as opposed to physically. Meanwhile, I was selfishly worried about the loss of his hot bod. I'm so ashamed.

But I'm telling you right now, umle, that I will NOT be sucked into the question of whether Alex will go to Florida or not!! I'm not falling for it! He's going to Florida, and that's that! I won't be fooled again! grumble, grumble, grumble . . .

He is going, right?

Remember when Paul Sheldon was rescued from his car wreck in the snow and the ice by Annie Wilkes, his number one fan? Remember, also, how she made him burn his novel "Fast Cars" due to all the potty-mouthing and lack of a certain Miss Chastain? And even worse.... when she read the new Misery novel and went beserk upon discovery of Misery Chastain's demise?
I'm not threatening you, or anything, but as a relative of an actress that once accepted a little golden trophy identical to the one given to Kathy Bates, I think that qualifies me to say:

"Alex and Ryan are going to cockadoody Miami... okay?

You KNOW what will happen otherwise

Seriously tho.... a stupendous chapter as always, my good man. Definitely the best novel I've read in ages... well, since The Wide Prairie Sky at least. I've even put "Under the Dome" on hold to enjoy this more (I hate reading more than one novel at a time.)

Aw Come on. Can't anyone see it?
And I don't mean like in The Minority Report.
"Can you see it?"

There was a modern update of Dante's Inferno by Larry Niven ( called Inferno ).
The hero came upon the ring in Hell where Witches were being punished.
And lo, he found his fourth grade teacher with her head and feet backwards, forced to walk or be torn up by the demons.
He couldn't believe such a good teacher would be there.
But she believed she deserved to be there. He argued that she taught him so much.
She explained that was because he was eager to learn and easy to teach.
But the students that were difficult or lethatgic or not yet able to grasp the terms required...
Well they were diagnosed as Aphasic.
A catch all term that really meant they were hard to teach.
At the time, the psychology/teaching community
considered it to mean that they couldn't learn.
But putting that in a childs foulder meant the next teacher tried even less.
And it snowballed.
And she said it was like witch craft.
Say the child is Aphasic and after a while, they can't learn.
A spell or the world telling them they can't learn, and damned if after a while they can't.

So look to that witch that was posing as a grade school teacher.
Through presence or evil intent, she was the real reason
Alex had his attack and hallucination.
And what really gets me is that the parents never seem to think she's a bad teacher. They never really get the brunt of her displeasure.

Oh for some good BIG guy to finally put her in her proper place.
Make her feel like a thing.
Oh God. Show her the proper way to teach and reach children.

Now I know.
I can see it.
Alex teaching the un-teachable children.
Helping them believe they can do whatever they set their heart and mind and will to do.
Just like Alex does.

You are brilliant!!
Oh do please...
Keep Writing.

MD

Little advice for Alex. If he ever feels like that again, most importantly... THINK HUMAN. An event of cascade morphic uncertainty, such as was experienced by Alex, can be a very VERY dangerous thing. Such events are extremely volatile and prone to the slightest suggestion. Even thoughts have to be carefully made, lest they tip the balance. And whatever he does, he must NOT be seen! Especially by cats. Very dangerous. He might cease to exist altogether.
In such episodes, one MUST focus on what one remembers of previous reality. Thinking of how one felt first thing that morning, think of the present person, and you hopefully will survive the ordeal with no harm done.
A cascade morphic uncertainty event is usually short and often relatively harmless. Admittedly turning into a 7 year old ain't great, but better than turning into a frog or bird or mouse, or indeed an 18th century serving table with pearl inlay.

"Where did you find a Gin and Tonic?"

"Weell.. I didn't. I found a small lake that thought it was a Gin and Tonic and jumped in and out of that. At least I think it thought it was a Gin and Tonic."

Totally, dude. That pearl inlay hurts like a sonofabitch!
