Like with comic books, a character with a chemical/scientific origin usually is limited to whatever powers he immediately gains (like Spider-Man or Captain America or the Hulk), while genetic mutation or natural abilities can naturally shift, adapt or evolve over time. I think I'm leaning towards making it natural, but maybe with some kind of shock to the system... maybe some emotional, sexual, or accidental epiphany or force jolted his system, like a brush with death or something, and prompted his body to go into overdrive, but naturally.

If you do opt for a chemical/drug-based solution, you have another question to ask: did the father do it himself, or did the new girlfriend? If the latter, is the father aware that he's being drugged, or not? And also, is he taking the drug repeatedly, or was it one exposure that set the growth in motion? And if he is taking it repeatedly, is he addicted to it?

Given these questions, a natural method of growth seems to be the most reliable and least complicated.

It's always cool to hear people like my ideas. I do want to point out that it doesn't have to be a dangerous "shock" (if that's the element you choose to go with)... maybe it's just the first time the dad was aroused in a particularly way (maybe at the sight of someone with muscles, maybe at the idea of growing huge himself when someone suggested it) and that arousal and the sexual thoughts brought about by it were the spark that caused his explosion of muscle.

Just came to say I agree with this as well. It's more interesting to me when it's more natural. Along those lines, if the growth is natural, it'd be nice to see the personality stay natural (like not a complete 180). Tho that may be because i like the dad's personality. But write how you want to.
