Fascinating article. It confirms what I have been suspecting for a while: American guys are getting shorter. I was talking aobut this with a guy at my gym who is my height (6'3".) He had just played in a water polo match at our old high school, the alumni against the current team. He couldn't believe how short the young guys were. When he and I were in school, there were lots of guys our height, but compared to most kids now, we look like freaks. There are exceptions of course. The poor nutirion habits of young people now makes sense as an explanation. When I talk to kids at my gym about diet, I can't believe what they eat. I ate a lot of junk at that age too, but my mom made sure I got three balanced meals a day too. Now, it seems most families don't eat together at all; just grab whatever is handy on the fly.
I agree that 5'10" is the optimum height for a bodybuilder. height is an advantage onstage, but the taller you are, the harder it is to fill out your frame. That height seems to have the advantages of height without the disadvantages. I've never understood why guys are into my height. I'd gladly sacrifice 5" to have more muscle! And personally, I LOVE short guys. Those tight little bodies, those round butts; so flexible, so hot as they bounce up and down on my...AHEM! Sorry...it's been too long... |

Reminds me of a Julia Sweeney ("That's Pat - SNL) line from her one-woman show.
"Why son't we ever get cancer of body parts we don't like -- We're sorry, Ms. Sweeney, you have fat cancer; we're going to have to take it all out." |

I turn my back for a day, and just look at the things that are being said about me!
I don't know that I qualify as a "tall muscle guy" right now. The height and the muscle are there, but so is a lot of fat! Check back with me in a few months... That's funny your saying how beautiful it is here, Brent. We just got chosen as one of the worst areas in the nation to live; lol. |

A Saying
I have a saying.
"A man who is tall and doesn't workout, is a waste of tall." |

It does seem like a waste... all of that imposing presence is wasted on puny tall guys. They look like cartoon stick figures

Tall Guys
Oddly, most tall guys have some kind of complex that everyone's looking at them and they feel they're already freaks so becoming a bodybuilder would be even freakier. I, of course, tend to disagree!

I would have to disagree with that also... having been tall and skinny at one time... I always felt like I disappeared in the crowd despite my height. It probably had something to do with submissive stance/walking and hating myself more than anything too... but still... being tall alone I don't think gets you noticed unless your REALLY SIGNIFICANTLY tall (6'8" to 7'-ish) and then if you're skinny too, it may not be the right kind of attention.
I did have an interesting experience at Soup 'r Salad a few nights ago where I wore one of my tighter cotton t-shirts to dinner and I could SWEAR that every time I stood up to get more food that I could mark 3 separate guys around my age sitting at their table that wouldn't take their eyes off me... even when I stared directly at them. It was strangely uncomfortable - and really odd - until I considered later that maybe they actually thought I was pretty big and had the same staring problem that I always had This normally doesn't happen to me.... but it's been occuring a bit more often than it used to. |

EJ hit on something here...it doesn't matter how tall you are (unless it's really extreme) unless you carry yourself with a certain level of confidence, too. That confidence tends (not always but tends) to come with added size.
At 6'5", I never felt freaky but there have been many times when I was self-conscious of my height...primarily because most conversations are going on about 8 to 10 inches below my eyes and ears and it's hard to be included unless you bend down, especially in noisy social situations ...and I find I have to ask people to repeat things a lot (and the hearing is okay). After filling out in college and putting on some beef (I went from about 175 or 180 to 250 in about six months and thankfully it was in the right places), I noticed people commented a lot more about my size than specifically about my height. I actually get a kick out of it when people bounce off me in a bar or running around a corner without looking...luckily, nobody's been hurt, yet. As far as the perfect height for a bodybuilder, if a big boy over 6'5" can pack on the beef to have the proportions necessary to be a bodybuilder, more power to him...I'm not sure I can afford the grocery bill myself...but I'm trying. 5'10" seems to be the norm for the really big professionals, so from a "realistic standpoint, that seems to be the perfect height to achieve the right mass. I think my preference would be to see some bruiser about 6'2 or 3" really pack it on and give the current crop of pro's a real run for the money. |

Tall guys...
...often develop posture problems,due to looking down at everyone.Long ago,on this Forum;we established that 5'10"was the perfect height for a bodybuilder(my height)Please remember;that all actors/models/dancers/bodybuilders/wrestlers lie about their heights/ages/weights/real names/personal history/measurments/poundages&sexual preference.

I wouldn't say no to an eight-footer.

My fantasy bodybuilder would be a truly enormous giant of a man (8' - 9') but with the thick, round, massive, stocky, beefy muscles of a much shorter guy. In real life I'd always go for a shorter guy (5'5" - 5'9") simply because of the excellent thick quality of their bodies. Shorter guys tend to look more "freaky" to me, like a ton and a half of muscle has been crammed onto a frame that can barely contain it, which is extremely hot to me. Taller bodybuilders tend to have longer, leaner muscles which doesn't quite do it for me as much. Shorter bodybuilders also usually have amazingly round, tight, beefy asses.

I am with 6'4 pretty tall, but still try my best to fill out. I think there isn't a disadvantage to be taller, probably a sort of genetics where more tall guys are looking really tall because they are a bit thinner than other. If you are tall you need more mass, a 21" arm looks on 5'2 far more impressive than on 6'4 but you can achieve the bigger mass in the same way, I would say.

I love the height question because I'm a Macrophile, so bigger is almost always better!
It may seem like too much to behold or imagine, but a King Kong or Godzilla-sized bodybuilder would kick ass!!!!!! |
