There are two things involved in this answer:

Part 1: to type a special character involves making your computer understand what you want to do. Usually for simple accented characters, there's a keystroke you can just memorize, but there's also usually some way of getting a palette of available characters.

On the Mac, you type a tilde-ed n with option-n followed by either n or shift-n, depending on whether you want it capitalized or not. On Mac OS 10.3 or later, you can also choose "Special Characters..." from the Edit menu of most programs and see a palette of the entire Unicode character set.

On U.S. English Windows, you can type a tilde-ed n by holding down alt (some keyboards only let one alt key work for this) and typing 0241 (some keyboards only let the number pad work for this). Or you can change the keyboard layout to "US International" and type shift-` followed by n or shift-n. Or you can use the Character Map doohickey to find the character you want, then copy it and paste it.

Part 2: although the character will (usually) appear when you type it using the methods above, you have to be careful when using any character which is not printed on a U.S. English keyboard. Unfortunately, for historical reasons which are too off-topic to go into here, computers record text in a wide variety of different ways, and if your text is going to be viewed by other people (say, for example, on a website) then you stand a good chance of either having your accented characters eaten or having them show up as something else on people who use a different OS and/or default language setting than you. (Windows users speaking European languages tend to be particularly bad at getting this right, probably because that's the most common OS and default setting so it's easier for such people to be unaware that other systems even exist.)

There isn't much you can do on a site like this, where you don't see any HTML, but when writing a web page yourself, you can make sure that accented characters always show up properly by encoding them as HTML entities, as in "&", "ñ", and "é". (There's a list in the HTML specification.)

Hi, to write spanish characters on a PC with english keyboard press:
ALT+164 for ñ, ALT+165 for Ñ, ALT+160 for á, ALT+161 for í, ALT+162 for, ALT+163 for ú, ALT+130 for é, ALT+162 for ó
You'll still miss other characters like ¿¡ just copy and paste them hehe
Spanish is a hard to learn language I'm afraid!

If anyone gets stuck for translations while checking out mutador's site, go to babelfish.com The translations are pretty literal, so you'll get the idea, but will miss many of the linguistic nuances. It's a good start until you become more comfortable with the language. BTW~ my own grasp of Spanish is pretty funny. I can read it and listen to it and have no problems understanding. When it comes time to respond though, my skills are pathetic. Anyone else have this problem?

Try translate.google.com it's quite good for spanish to english translation. Not perfect but good. On the other hand it sucks translating english into anything

Sometimes I have this problem with english. I can write in it, read in it and even when i hear it i can understand. When it comes to talk.... sometimes it's a bit embarrasing for me. I'm not that good with speaking it.

I'm glad I'm not the only one! Funny story: I was working as a substitute teacher at my old high school. I am certified to teach history and social studies. I ran into my old Spanish teacher in the hallway, and after exchanging greetings, he asked me what I was doing there. I said I was subbing while waiting to get a teaching job, and his immediate reaction was "Not Spanish...right?!". I can't express the relief on his face when I confirmed that no, I am not a Spanish teacher!

I think speaking a foreign language is very hard, even if you can write it fairly decently and understand it perfectly. The point is you have to enroll on a conversation class or have an experience abroad to develop the speaking ability. In my case I entered a conversation course on english but the level of the rest of the students was not very good, some were studying english for less than 2 years, and it was hard to mantain a fluent conversation. You have to find people with high skills in the language you want to practice.
Accents are another issue, I also have to confess that I've had calls from a client from england a couple times and I had a hard time understanding what he was saying, to me the american accent comes more natural, probably because most tv series and movies are american, plus he was on speakerphone and the background echo didn't help. When I answered him, words came hardly out of my mouth but I realized too that's because I'm not used to speaking in english and that produces hesitation, when you're writing you can retype and look for better words but when you're speaking doing that is a little awkward
So learning another language takes a lot of practice and immersion...

Proximo means more pics, so does Leer Mas (leer is good in English too). If you think this is hard try a Russian site, or Finnish. Guapo! Culturismus is guapo! All the guys here are big ones, all guapo. Culturismus is a nice fancy word for meat on the hoof.
