College

well, I leave for college tomorrow, leaving behind the few people who know i'm gay. Anyone have suggestions or experiences they'd like to share about dealing with your sexual orientation at college? Thanks

:-)

I didn't deal with it until I was 35, after I'd been married for 11 years and had two kids. So you're WAAAAAY ahead of me.

Where are you going to school? I think on most college campuses you'll find a supportive community, although there will be the usual number of jerks who can't deal.

Best of luck on your new adventure!

xoxo

Most non-religious colleges are now pretty gay friendly, depending on the part of the country you matriculate in. Residence halls advisors have taken diversity training, and you'll probably find gay-straight alliances and LGBT clubs. Many even have Gay Student Unions.

Don't worry and I'm sure you'll have a great time.

most puns in the following post are intentional:

I hope I'm not too late to add suggestions, but here it goes:
I wouldn't worry at all, because you are now with adults, that are studying what they are interested in. In any class where you do personal introductions, I ALWAYS used the opportunity to come out and say something like, "I'm Brent, ..., and my husband Rob and I have lived in Portland for 10 years." Or something like that. If you just come right out, people will respect your honesty. If you try to hide it, they won't know what else you are hiding. That's my 2?, but I live in a VERY liberal city.

Good luck!

most college cities I think are pretty liberal.... sounds like a GREAT plan to me.

Honestly - ALWAYS the best policy.
