Interesting Experience-- A reverse hulkout I had a experience today that I think you guys will appreciate. A lot of you big guys have no doubt had the experience of outgrowing one set of clothes after another. Here's what happened to me today. I have recently, in honor of my 35th birthday, given myself a complete makeover. I have lost 40 pounds, changed my hair color, and planned a New York theater trip and a beach trip to Delaware for my birthday (in two weeks). Naturally, as I have lost weight, I have had to say goodbye to one set of "fat" clothes after another. Now, at 5'3" and 139 pounds, I am back at my 16th birthday weight. I feel fabulous and people say I look better than I have in years. But as I went shopping for a new suit (for the theater) and new shorts for the beach today, I had both an exhilarating and humiliating experience. Men's clothes at nice stores don't fit me! I was forced, in order to get a jacket that didn't hang on me like a tent, to go to the children's department at Famous Barr, and had to get my shorts in children's at Kohl's. Naturally I felt great, as though I had really accomplished my goal of losing weight. But at the same time, I'm thinking, "OMG, I am 35 years old, and I'm built like a boy". Is it ok to have conflicting feelings about this? Have you big guys ever wondered if you were getting too big? I had to spend a lot of money today. How expensive, clothes wise, has bodybuilding been for you? I'm just interested to hear the flip side. __________________ Hulkoutlvr |

Of course it's OK to feel conflicted. But now that you've gotten to a more comfortable weight, you can change your workouts to start adding muscle bulk instead of fat. And at your height, you will be able to get MUCH more muscular than a taller person would, and thereby be even more amazing/freaky. Years ago, I met one of the rising young star bodybuilders (I keep finding Tom Platz' name but I don't think it was him, as Platz is 5'7" and this guy was 5'4" tops, only slightly taller than my wife was. His upper body was only-comparitively weak as well.) He had legs a bit bigger around than his waist. It was more than a little freaky and very cool. Lee Priest is 5'4" tall. You'd probably end up buying tailored clothes if you want them to look right, but at your age and height and weight that happen anyway, unless you want to dress like a teenager, like you said. (TEENAGER. Not children. Children's clothes are cut differently!) |

When I first got my weight down (5'6"@>200lb to 5'6"@130lb) I could fit into some kid clothes but mostly only husky sizes. Adults have wider hips than teenagers of similar height and weight. That was a drag, I had been in huskies as a heavy kid... I funny thing though I found kids basic blue jeans (Sears ToughSkin's) were a lot more heavy duty than most adult jeans... I take a fall off my bicycle once in them that would have shredded most jeans and my leg, but they came through intacted and accept for a couple of small cuts from gravel through the deniem so was my leg... Without them I would have had some major road-rash. One of the things I did lose the weight lots of miles on bike... several hours a day... As an example of a short guy that is really massive and cut guy, I will mention Dave Candy. http://www.davidcandy.com/ Ender |
