Cheap F***ing Food

Well, my father just informed me that he's leaving my brother and myself about 44 bucks a week each for the next month for food. So, the choice is for me to spend a good percentage of my summer job money on food for now (instead of on food later, textbooks, tuition, gas, etc...), or find cheap stuff to eat.

So, general question: what are some CHEAP things for a dude on a bulk? (With keeping nuts to a minimum, since I work with kids, some of which have allergies.)

And a rather specific one: I saw some chicken legs for something like a buck a pound (!); would those be a good substitute for boneless chicken breasts?

Tell me something I do not know. Weekly income ?53 ($86) of which at least ?30 has to go towards federal and state taxes. As a result the only time I am able to buy foods that are good for me (i.e low fat, high fibre, high wholegrain, oats) is when I go to the town of Carmarthen about once every 8 - 12 weeks.

The best advice about food is Stay away from the middle aisles of the grocery store--cheaper by weight maybe but not by nutrition. The perimeter of the store is where the food is, the rest of it is snacks, and processed crap, try a local farmers market they usually have great vegetables at reasonable prices. Buy a whole chicken, instead of chicken breasts, you can make a few meals from it, including soup. Its worth stocking up if your local stores are mediocre at best. Etnic markets is another way to buy wholesome food cheap especially vegetables and meats.
