Great story! One minor (and people will argue this one ad infinitum) point: "Y'all" is ALWAYS a plural construction. Only Yankees say "Y'all" to an individual. Occasionally a Southerner will say "Y'all" to an individual but ONLY with the implication that there's someone else in the background, e.g.: You might say "Y'all have a great place" to an individual friend, knowing he shares it with a few roommates. If he lives alone, you would say, "You have a great place." Likewise: You might say, "Y'all done real good" to a football player, meaning him AND his teammates. If you're referring to HIS performance only (the rest of the team sucked!), you would say, "You did real good." And, yes, no matter how many times I say this, I invariably run across some Yankee who insists that he or she has been addressed as "Y'all" on multiple occasions. See what comes after "occasionally..." xoxo Richard |

Y'all Arpeejay, I beg to differ! I have lived in New Orleans and there is a certain class of people that use Y'all for both individuals and groups. Some always use Y'all instead of you or your. Stan happens to be one of those people. RCC |

I'll grant that New Orleans is a special case. Also: You spelled it correctly, which is a godsend in itself! Of course, then there are pronunciation questions: Does it rhyme with tall, ball, and call, or trawl, brawl, and crawl? <cackle><need><coffee><can't><have><it><yet!> xoxo Richard |

Great story. Like to see a bit more flavor of New Orleans. Perhaps more self-expression on Mark's part....who is the dominant one here? |
