Missing Writers: Where are they?

Specifically:

Falseyedee

Josef Howard

Where are you?

Come back! I miss you!

I'm sure there are others as well but I haven't seen a new story from either of these guys since last summer.

<< sigh >>

xoxo

The only one with whom I have remained in contact is FanTCdude/FanTCman. He is at least temporarily "retired" from writing MGS. He is like many of us struggling with the economic situation within our country and has had to focus on other things in his life.

There are many I would love to see back in the fold and writing again, but I suspect that they are going to remain retired. The economy has hit so many and the idea of censoring stories to please the ever tightening noose of what is and is not "acceptable" to those passing moral judgment on others adds complications.

In all reality I suspect that some of these people are still writing for their own enjoyment, but they have chosen to give up submitting their work to public forums.

Any censoring that occurs is self-censoring. If people don't like what I write, they can lump it. Dealing with economic dire straits is an entirely different matter.

Falseeyedee is running a pay muscle fiction site at www.musclefiction.com

Josef Howard has a blog at a-growing-concern.blogspot.com but hasn't posted anything since last July.

I really miss a good Josef Howard story.

That's a shame you feel that way. It's too bad that some people have to go out of their way to spoil it for you. I've made it a point not to post a negative comment on this forum, because this is something being offered for free, and that's to be encouraged. The last thing I'd want is to see the entertaining stories dry up because the odd poster can't be nice. They're just being rude. Like anyone else, I'm not going to like every story I read, but who's to say the next story by a given author won't be terrific? People that make their living writing know rejection as stock-in-trade, but this is a pleasure site, so everyone should play nice.

P.S. I'd like to know where I can still read your stories.

Hmm, that's disappointing to hear. This is exactly the sort of issue I was concerned about when I first heard of the site, but I kept my mouth shut. (Wouldn't want to give the impression I was "being negative" or anything.*) I can't claim it's the reason I didn't sign up -- I simply don't have the money, hell I don't even have a credit/debit card -- but I think even if I had it would have given me pause.

Running a successful pay site is a big task, just from a practical standpoint -- not to mention maintaining the level of creativity required. But especially with a subscription-based service, IMHO it's part of the commitment. And while the rates @ musclefiction.com were quite a bit lower than the established "big sites", it's a lot of money to be paying unless it gives you access to a sizeable existing content pool, and the expectation of regular updates to supplement that. I'm reluctant enough to make such commitments, in my own life, that whenever possible I refuse to take payment in advance. (Which can be problematic too, when others aren't prepared to pay.)

Add to that the fact that the "gold rush" that entices people into such businesses is generally over by the time they hear about it, unless they're on the inside. titanmen.com is currently offering 1-year subscriptions for half-price ($99, or around twice the 1-year subscription rate at musclefiction.com), and for that you get access to what's sure to be quite a big library of content, and a 25% discount on DVD purchases. It's not easy to compete with that.

Even more upsetting, it at least appears musclefiction.com is still taking subscriptions, without any indication that it's in "zombie mode". And that it looks to be running an outdated version of its subscription-management software, one which has known security vulnerabilities.

It's really too bad. I would have loved to see it succeed, and reach a critical mass where the established content alone made membership a good value. At that point, the level of interest would probably have been enough to drive the site's continued operation. All of you "early adopters" deserve thanks for taking a chance on the fledgling site.
* - I make the "being negative" comment not in reference to anything on this site. It's something that's been an issue in my own life, one I've been trying to work on in recent years.
I'm very good at spotting problems, in seeing the potential obstacles to a plan. When something's presented to me, I play it through to conclusion in my head, and try to prepare for all of the ways I can imagine that it might go wrong. (There's even a term in psychology -- Defensive Pessimism -- for that approach to problem-solving.)
You'd be surprised how unwelcome a "skill" that is, in dealing with optimists and others who take a different approach. So, nowadays, I'm learning to hold my tongue, and keep my worries to myself. Which sucks, but it helps keep the peace.

Well, some of us simply don't have the time. And some of us, like myself, are no longer inclined to post stories any more.

Define irony.

Arpeejay made a thread looking for missing writers.

And now I'm using it to try to find him to see if he's working on the female muscle beast story.

hmtf? Which site or group is that? Didn't see anything new on O's site, so if the new stuff is at hmtf, I'd like to find it and read it.

Thanks for letting us know that Wordshop's still posting his stories.

I would have continued posting the Andrew Prequels on this forum, but once the character age limit (over 16) came into effect, I left the completed Chapters on my website: www.freewebs.com/theandrewprequels.
