I don't approve of steroid use but I can understand why policemen would want to use it. Selling is one thing but cops shouldn't be punished so badly for using it because they wanted to protect themselves. Unfortunately it seems that too many people think cops are all tough guys who don't need any help. A lot of these guys are possibly still using the stuff and I doubt anyone is trying to help them stop.

My understanding from a mate in the Met (the police force for London UK) was that steroids and heavy gym use were prevalent in some parts of the force and quite encouraged. Certainly they knew who not to buy from. Still in the UK possession and use of steroids is not a criminal offence. Selling or supplying is.

Sounds like the UK has some smart laws.

I know a guy who's a cop and is taking roids to get bigger, but as far as I know it's strictly for powerlifting purposes, he's never mentioned doing it to protect himself. at 19 he weighed 285 at 5'6" without roids before he lost some size. now he's 22 I think, and is planning on hitting 300 this time.

The issue is not protecting themselves. They could do that in many ways -- karate, training to be a better fighter, lifting weights, taking reasonable precautions, etc. The issue is breaking a law. A police officer's job is to enforce the law. Arguing that breaking the law is permissible to enforce it is just plain stupid. That is why these people lost their jobs.

Well, that's one reason I could never be a cop. I could never sacrifice my judgment as an individual to the god of authority.

we had an unfortunate incident...

here in ny a few yrs, ago.an officer raped a suspect(Abner Bulima)with a broomstick.i was amazed they didn't try a"'roid rage"defense.the offending officer had a huge neck&that puffy"juice"look.cops are regularly tested for recreational drugs, but only for steroids if there's a complaint from a superior.overall,i have a lot of sympathy for the police.it's HORRIBLY difficult work;&it forces you to associate with the scum of the earth on a regular basis.it REALLY distorts your worldview.

Exactly. If you CHOOSE to be an officer of the law, you are EXPECTED to uphold that law. The choice was theirs when they decided on the career.

I have to agree with Corwin on this. Not only on the fact that I would never want to be a cop, but more importantly on the idea that extra muscle does not always = extra defensive ability. Certainly being big and strong allows you some degree of extra leverage in a fight and it defeinitely gives more intimmidation. HOWEVER - when I began my journey into BJJ training about 4 years ago - I had my 6'4" 250lb ass handed to me more than once by multiple guys in the 5'6" range with far superior training.

bottom line - you can kick anyone's ass or at least put up a very practical self-defense regardless of their size given enough skill and training. Maybe local police departments could/should invest more into that?

A saying from the past....

"Cops always have the best drugs"

Knowing that cops always confiscate the best drugs and keep them to themselves. As far as cops using steroids, talk about hypocritical! If they are against the law for you and I, then they are also against the law for them!
