A survey of British television Following the recent discussion on what sort of programmes / adverts feature feats of strength / acts of bodybuilding, I would like to know if members would be interested in a survey of television here in the UK for the week March 14th - March 18th 2005 (after the new spring schedules launch) to see how many programmes / adverts have some form of bodybuilding related content and compare it with the same week in the United States. To give you an idea of the popularity of this concept in the UK, in the space of 5 minutes yesterday I noticed 5 references across 50 odd channels, the references were: 1) Mona The Vampire : The Bunyip (BBC One) "A new fitness centre opens in the town owned by an Australian who flexes his right bicep to impress the crowd attending the opening causing it to pump up. The animators decided to include several visable sinews" 2) My Parents are Aliens : The Rescue (ITV 1) "Two aliens left stranded on the planet Earth realise that a native spaceship is passing by and debate with the children that they have adopted whether or not they should be rescued. As they remember the things that they have got up to, we see how they adopted the children. One of the aliens morphs into a male model with a broad Scouse accent" 3) The World's Wierdest Adverts (BRAVO) "An advert from 1988 was shown promoting Irn-Bru drink showing a teenager bending street lamps in order to help his girlfriend find her keys at night" 4) HMS Pinafore (Artsworld) "This was a recording of a 1997 production of the Gilbert and Sullivan operatta set on board a ship in Portsmouth harbour. The scene in question is when a "lady of the night" is trying to convince the Captain that she can tell the future. When she rips off his shirt, she screams as he starts bouncing his pecs. 5) Body Heat (Discovery Health) "Following a group of British wannabe bodybuilders from first selection to their contest, they had a montage of past British bodybuilding champs to "Physical" by Olivia Newton John __________________ The stronger they are, the more muscled they are |

Number four sounds good. Shirt ripping, pec flexing, and a Gilbert and Sullivan operetta as a bonus! Is this on DVD? I assume it would be out only in the UK though. |

Captain Cocoran (from Auckland, May 1997) His name is David Gould and he played the Mikado as part of the triple header that HMS Pinafore concluded Yes, the series are available on DVD. If you go to http://www.concentric.net/~Oakapple/gasdisc/ and scroll down to "Pinafore" from 1997, and then scroll to the bottom of the page you will find a link to the company involved __________________ The stronger they are, the more muscled they are Last edited by CelticMuscle; February 25th, 2005 at 06:53 AM. A "Goulden" Mikado! Whoa - What a "Great Mikado"! His build is "an object all sublime" that he must have "achieve[d] in time"! Who knew G&S players could be so buff! How "mighty" were the "mighty troops of Titipu" in this production?! His pecs are definitely "all ablaze with ever-blooming glory"! "Oh joy, oh rapture undefined, the sky is all ablaze!" Here's a link where you can buy a region free DVD copy of Pinafore. I don't know that I'd want to pay that price since I'd just buy it for the flexing, but I do like G&S so there are advantages. http://members.iinet.net.au/~essgee1/html/Videoshoppingpage1.html It's nice when one can enjoy fine art and get something extra out of it. |
