Whilst waiting for the Olympics

If you are keeping track of these things, then you will know that the 2012 Summer Olympic Games which are being held in
LONDON
(Sorry, but as you can imagine there is a great sense of national pride about it)
start in 678 days time. That's 678 days until the creme de la creme of international sportsmen allow themselves to be oogled by millions of spectators.

However, if you have Queen Elizabeth II as your recognised head of state, then the next chance comes not in 678 days time, but 15 days time as the nineteenth edition of the Commonwealth Games gets underway in New Delhi, India allowing some of the following to show their worth

Steve Hooker (Australia)

David Weir (England)

Cameron van der Burgh (South Africa)

Oh, God bless the Common Wealth. Sometimes I wish I was Canadian (for several reasons). I hear that Australia will be voting about severing its relation to the Queen.

They have been threatening that for decades. The last referendum (held in 1999) was YES (maintain links) 51% NO (republic) 49%. On the subject of which the athetics start today (with luck) which will see the arrival of Steve Hooker (AUS) on the scene.

...some of the athletes are hot!

...and it's not just countries that have The Queen as head of state, India, Pakistan, Malta, Cyprus to name a few that don't have her as head of state but are commonwealth members.

The Commonwealth Games finish tomorrow

and the BBC's various reporters at the various sports have put together their best bits of "strange and odd events". The "strange and odd event" that might interest this group came from the line up to a heat in the Men's 50m Freestyle when the camera was going down the line of athletes and ended up at the person on the outside lane (who represented South Africa). I have no idea if he knew that the camera team were slow in cutting from one camera to another but as soon as he was introduced to the crowd he started bouncing his pecs without a care in the world to which the BBC swimming team commented: "Do you think he's in the right sport?"

Geoff is a couple of years younger than me and grew up in my street. A larakin and genuinely nice guy. A 'what you see is what you get' kinda guy. His retiring and going into real estate (subsequent weight gain) was exactly what he needed to recentre and get focussed back on his one true passion - swimming. I have so much respect for the guy.
