Which tribe(s)? The picture I have attached to this message was downloaded from www.teenmuscleboys.com, gallery #64. I am preparing to write and post, as I was recently challenged to do, a muscle growth story with a Native American theme. Since I would prefer to be as accurate as possible in the use and description of Native American clothing and regalia, I would greatly appreciate it if anyone in this community who is a Native American, or who is familiar with their clothing and regalia styles and patterns, could leave me a message identifying, as far as is reasonably possible, which tribe or tribes this young muscleman might be a member of. (I say "tribes" because my research thus far indicates that some types and styles of clothing and regalia--war bonnets, for example--are common to many tribes among what are sometimes called the "Plains Indians," and I certainly do NOT want to be even remotely unfair or insulting to ANY of them!) Thanks in advance for any help anyone in this community can provide on this potentially sensitive subject. |

This picture may be of "Chief Illiniwek," the mascot for the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. |

is it just me.... or isn't he a bit european looking? Not that I mind looking at him at all... but uhhh.... am I the only one who noticed that or was everyone else just busy staring at his huge boulder-ous pecs? |

You're not the only one, but I say let's just make-believe he is pretty cute, right? Even if he isn't really native american... Heck, you never know--he could have trace amounts of native american in him. Like a great-great-great grand mother or father, heh. Who's to know? __________________ just my thoughts as a writer Things happen. |

He'a about as much a native American..... ...as George W. Bush (the Incumbent) is a Native Texan". [Born in CT, attended prep school at Phillips Andover, (Mass.) college at Yale in CT, grad school at Harvard (Mass.)] --No UTat Austin, no Texas Tech, no Aggies! |

Guys, I know that! Guys, I realize that the guy wearing the regalia may very well be "lily-white," as the old expression goes. What I'm asking is which tribe or tribes does the regalia he's wearing represent? (BTW, there are a good many Americans that have some Native American blood in their family lineage. I've been told that I have some Iroquois iin my family history, and possibly some Cherokee as well. This is all the more reason I want to avoid saying ANYTHING that would be demeaning or insulting in any way!) Any further suggestions as to how I can identify the tribe(s) involved? |

Just a wild guess.... ...are there any Native American tribes centered in Las Vegas? |

Research Ideas I'm sure you could learn more about tribal costumes by either contacting the library at the National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI) in either DC or NY--part of the Smithsonian. I've done research there and they have great collections/people. The problem is that THEY might well be offended by the picture. Alternatively, there are many illustrated books on all aspects of American Indian art and culture (I've seen some on costume in the past) available at a good bookstore or library (Vanderbilt?). You might find websites that deal with tribal costumes by Googling for "Native American Costumes" or "American Indian Costumes". Finally, I liked that Illini theory--you could check on their website re: their team. Better hurry, though. I read today that most if not all of the remaining college teams with Native American themes/mascots are being pressured to change them. |

Follow-up to Research Ideas Thanks for the suggestions! As it happens, a former co-worker of mine is part Cherokee, and will be attending a regional pow-wow this weekend. She will attempt to do some research for me there. As far as the Illini idea is concerned, I would really need to look at the students who have protrayed the Chief over the past 5 to 10 years to be sure. Ironically, my late uncle, Dr. Lyle H. Lanier, was Provost of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champain for many years! As to the books you've suggested, I'll follow up on them as my schedule permits. In the meantime, thanks again for the suggestions, and if anyone else comes up with any more, by all means, let's hear them! |

For some reason i remember seeing a picture of marcel wearing native american clothes... this could be part of the same video |
| |||
More info, please! I'm afraid I'm not very familiar with Marcel, although I vaguely remember either seeing or hearing the name. Cna someone give me some more info about him, and the video referred to here? |

Re: Marcel I don't know if "your guy" is Marcel or not. However, the Marcel I've heard of is in many videos from Vista Video (www.vistavideo.com). There are also lots of pics of him (not the Indian one, though) on GMpics.com, which you have to join but is free. |
