too muscular? (sorry for the lack of caps -- typing is hard right now) no one could ever accuse me of being too muscular (i don't think), but... yesterday, while cycling home, my bike got caught in some vines and i went flying. one SNAP later, and i'm lying on the trail, noting that my arm is broken. the x-rays revealed that i had dislocated my elbow (the technical term is 'grossly dislocated' meaning the ball and socket were not even close to each other.). they had to reduce the joint, so they gave me pain meds. that's really the last i remember and where their problems begin. it seems that all the lifting made my muscle too strong and tense, and they couldn't reduce the joint. 6mg of dilodid and lots of conscious sedatation later, on their 4th try, they finally restored my arm to something that should begin to work again in a week or two. __________________ http://www.scott-safier.us "Stand firm for what you believe in until or unless logic or experience prove you wrong. OUCH OUCH OUCH OUCH! I am sorry to hear that! There are a few things I would never, ever want to experience in life, and an injury like that is one of them. Even with meds. In one way I guess it was a compliment that you were "too muscular" (which, by the way, is something I don't believe you can truely be). I guess this is why they keep saying that sometimes fat can help. You see accident after accident where the guy ends up only scratched up because his gut/fat/padding prevented further injury. While muscle does provide some padding/support, it doesn't have the shock absorption of fat. Go figure. Anyways, it's a bummer that you can't lift for a while. Just take the time to rest up and heal quickly! Scott __________________ In a world of old memories... There's no room for visitors. - Nobuhiro Watsuki |

What (the other) Scott said: Rest up, give yourself time to heal. xoxo richard |

Congratulations on being too muscular! Oh, and sorry to hear about the accident. Take time to fully heal. Remember, muscle has memory and you won't lose so much that you can't gain it back rapidly. |

Yikes, sorry to hear about the accident, Corwin Hope you heal quickly, we love your stories!! __________________ -ottomun6- It's time to stop sitting on the sidelines and get in there! |

Sorry Scott! Man, it never seems to fail either--those injuries seem to happen just when you're making great progress in the gym. Sorry to hear about your dislocation--but in a few weeks it will just seem like a bad speed bump. Take it easy man---glad you reached that "too muscular" status tho! Get well quick! |

No, no! Big is good. Tense is not. I read an article in Men's Health some time ago that said tha many men neglect a very important part of excericse- stretching and flexibility. It turns out that being flexible and having full range of motion can increase your gains. So make sure to strech while you're healing, if the doc oks it, and stretch when workingout. |

Scott, take care, and heal soon! __________________ God is in the rain. |

Well, the splint is off and the arm is moving again. It's weak, and the range of motion is limited, but it is moving. I expect physical therapy will last a good couple of months, but I am determined to get back on track as soon as possible. thanks for the good thoughts. __________________ http://www.scott-safier.us "Stand firm for what you believe in until or unless logic or experience prove you wrong. Corwin, So sorry to hear about your accident -- but glad to hear that you're already on the road to recovery. Given your passion and your stubborn-ness, I can't imagine you'll be down for long. Good luck, and best wishes! You'll be back on the bench in weeks, I predict... It's interesting -- I've heard lots of stories about lifters who were protected by their excessive musculature when they got into accidents. Car accidents, falls, breaks, falling down a well, even -- situations where the extra mass, padding and density helped protect bones and organs. But I have to say that this is the first time I've heard about a guy whose musculature was so strong/tight that it posed problems. It makes sense, given the nature of your injury -- and given the fact that you've been getting fucking STRONG lately. Woof! Clearly they just needed some STRONG medical staff on hand at that hospital -- if they had a powerlifting-nurse on duty, he'd have been able to pull hard and strong and pop you back into joint. Maybe you should recommend that they hire some big boyz -- and then you could apply for the job, if you wanted. *chuckle* At any rate, stay strong and keep your spirits up. You'll be back in no time. -- James __________________ 6'3", 225#, growth-oriented lifter. Too Muscular? Puleeez! Hey Corwin, you're definitely a ranking "elder statesmen of muscle" on this forum. And I say that in all respects. Bummer to hear of your accident and your explanation of it made me cringe at the thought. Take care big guy and get well... er, bigger soon! |
