Angry My State is Officially Crazy!

This is why my state will never get any respect EVER:

These people are so looney tunes that they would vote for a convicted terrorist over a black man.

I feel for you. The levels of ignorance in the US are staggering and I don't know what we can do about it.

We Brits can do much better than that

In 1989, Scotland was the first part of the UK to experience the community charge (which the media subtitled "poll tax") as a replacement for the rates. As a result several people refused to pay it and ended up in prison including one Thomas Sheridan and as such was expelled from the Scottish Labour Party. In the 1992 general election, he stood for Parliament as the Scottish Militant Labour candidate for the Glasgow, Pollok constituency and managed to poll a very impressive 21% of the vote and a few weeks later in the Scottish local elections and won the Pollok ward. Nothing unusual about that you might think. However, for both elections he gave his address as "Glasgow Jail" on his nomination papers making him the first councillor in Scotland to be elected whilst in prison.

And in 1981, Bobby Sands won the Fermanagh and South Tyrone by-election as the Anti H-Block candidate whilst not only in prison for terrorist offences but also on hunger strike as well.

Yes, we have had our fair share

Rotherham Parliamentary By-Election 1994: Screaming Lord Sutch (of the Monster Raving Loony Party) polled 4.2% of the vote compared to the usual 0.8% in the general election across three constituencies
Hartlepool Mayoral Election 2002: H'angus the Monkey was elected beating the offical Labour candidate on a platform of free bananas to the schoolchildren of the borough (but has been re-elected twice as Stuart Drummound since then)

But what made Fermanagh and South Tyrone so extraordinary was that the candidate was a convicted terrorist who was elected whilst in the middle of a hunger strike claiming that he was a political prisoner. He died a few weeks later and in the following by-election, his agent was elected. However in 1983, the Unionists retook the seat and it didn't change hands again until 2005 when Sinn Fein won the seat.

It could be worse. You could live in North Carolina or Texas, where, in both states, you can marry your first cousin as long as that cousin is not the same gender as you.

No offense to anyone who lives in North Carolina or Texas.

Alright guys, the original topic was about racism not incest! The truth is WhoDunIt, we weren't a state yet until the war was over. (We were part of Virginia!)

The politics in this state are among the strangest in the country because we consistently stay Democratic in local and state elections, but go Republican in national elections. (I think that Arizona and Kentucky are quite similar in some aspects with exception to Mitch McConnell in KY. Idiot for brains!)

Since the 1980s, my state has only had two Republican governors, Arch Moore and Cecil Underwood, both of which were either criminals or extremely old. In fact, Moore's daughter, Shelley Moore Capito represents my district, and she is horrible too.

It has been over thirty years since we have had a Republican senator here. Our late great senator Robert Byrd used to be one of the most powerful men in the country. After his death though, we ended up with our former governor Joe Manchin III as his successor, and he isn't too popular right now. It is funny because he was a pretty good governor, but is a terrible senator for some reason. (Most likely because he is an extremely moderate Democrat and has been criticized for being one in name only.)

I like talking about politics from here because it is strange.

I can kind of work with the ignorance, really. The problem as I see it is that the more ignorant they are, the more certain they tend to be of their opinions. They are the same common people who deeply distrust "All 'em liberal elites with their edjumecation, and book learnin'."

But this quote from Bertrand Russell suggest it has always been so. The problem is, one of the only two political parties has learned how to manipulate that ignorant certainty along with fear in order to have their way.

The trouble with the world is that the stupid are cocksure and the intelligent are full of doubt.
~ Bertrand Russell

P.S. Since this thread made me remember and then go find this quote, I believe it's time to update my signature.... I like this one.

More proof that my state has crazy people:

Randall Terry has actually received 23,000 votes in the primary season. He is a pro-life organizer that is not a real Democrat. He moved here because he wanted to 'focus' on his campaign here.
