super strong skinny guy

didn't know were to post this so...
a couple of days ago i'm doing chest and tris when this really skinny guy comes over by me and grabs the 80's. now when i say skinny i mean he looked like he had never done any kind of exercise in his life. now i'm pretty small myself but this guy makes me look like lee labrada. all he had was a layer of flab that kept him from looking like he was anorexic. so anyways he grabs the 80's and procedes to bench with them. eventually he's pumping the 95's when 20 min. earlier i was maxing out with the 70 lbs dumbels. how can this be? or am i just weak? but i know i'm not that weak because i lift heavier weight than alot of the guys at my gym. needless to say, this experience was much more impressive than seeing all of the biggest guys that day.

it's completely possible and perfectly illustrates my point about how differently a person's body can be constructed as far as leverage advantages and muscle and tendon connector points are concerned.

I've known more than one construction guy who was FAR skinnier than I... who could lift more weight in one hand than I could on my shoulders (at the time when I was 19)...

Awesome story!!! Just keep focusing on your own growth and don't worry about the numbers, you can't compete with remarkable genetics.

Never underestimate the power of genetics in influencing power, strength and size. In general, size and strength do correlate but if you are ectomorphic there is often a huge disconnect between size and strength. The guy you describe sounds like a classic ectomorph. I often elicit a similiar reaction in the gym--guys that are far bigger than me are often surprised about how much I am lifting . Some have theorized that ectomorphic builds have a greater capcity for neural recruitment which offsets to a degree the biomechanical disadvantage of longer limbs.

I used to know this guy;....

VERY lean.About5'7".Looked a LOT like popeye(without the forearms).Had a dance/martial arts background. His strength was about normal for someone his size EXCEPT!I used to watch him clean 205lbs.&then"flick"it up in the air!Complete extension;but the fastest military press you ever saw in your life! For reps!I still don't know how he did it!

I think everyone has a "specialty" to some degree - physically - if they've ever managed to find it. I bet you do too glam.

People always seem most amazed when I'm able to push a large full wheelbarrow of rocks or concrete up steep hill or up a ramp into a truck from a standstill and not dump the load or waver... and do it over and over again. I'm not sure how I do it, I just do. I think it's a combination of back/shoulder power for stability and some extra help in the quad/thigh department. It's not the most amazing thing really compared to a bodybuilder's achievements, but I've yet to find anyone who can outpace me in the "wheelbarrow race"
