As a National Board Member of Stonewall Democrats, I will point out that the measure passed the legislature solely because of Democratic votes. And as Arnold's veto demonstrates, no matter how you try to dress up a Republican in socially liberal or libertarian clothes, when push comes to shove, the Republican party does not stand for equality or equal rights for LGBT people.

This is, sadly, true. Though, i may say, in Aaaarhnold's defence (sort of), there may be greater forces at work here than the girly man himself. The party may very well be a firece threatening force.

Curious- does the federal government have a law against same sex marriages? If so, then he would be contradicting the federal government- and does claim to have reasons for his veto- or is it just unexplicable prejudice? Dont get me wrong, i think the republicans are major fucks for thier thinly veiled homophobia, and its way of bleeding into policy, but im entertaining the thought that there may be something more to this story than arnold.

No federal law can stop a state from enacting marriage equality for same sex couples. The Defense of Marriage Act does other things, like making FEMA discriminate against same-sex couples effected by Hurricane Katrina.

Lambda Legal has opened a hotline for LGBT people who have been displaced by Katrina and are facing federal discrimination (ala DoMA or otherwise)
