Working out with kettlebells

Lately I felt that I've been in a rut with my training. I haven't been doing a good job balancing my leg adductor and abductor development, so my left knee can get out of alignment when bending. Also, my poundages for certain exercises aren't going up. Instead of trying a different set of exercises with machines and regular free weights, I decided to try training with kettlebells to see if the change would help.

I dropped in at a studio in Palo Alto, CA where they have kettlebell classes in the evening. When I arrived I didn't know what to expect, except that I'd be throwing around a round piece of metal with a handle. I didn't mind having a cute instructor [short, dark hair, goatee (not a van Dyke), shorter than my 5'6.5" height, and fit but not heavily muscled build] and only 1 other student in my class. I had a problem with my initial exercise that involve moving my hips explosively to keep the kettlebell in my hands moving. After the instructor, Joe, told me to imagine having rough sex, then I was able to move my hips in a manner appropriate for that exercise. Before I knew it, the 45-min. class was over. The stretching we did at the end of the class only reminded me that I need to improve my range of motion. In about 3-4 more weeks of training I hope to see if kettlebell training helps my bench press, squat and deadlift poundages.

I have been distracted with family matters for the past two months. I haven't worked out during that time. I hope to start again very soon. I'll let you know of my kettlebell workout results in another month or two.
