buttons are poppin'!

Before I bought all new shirts I frequently would pop the buttons over my pecs. Most often they would just unbutton and I'd have a stretched gap where you could see my undershirt, but every-now-and-again they would really "pop" off.

One memorable time it happened when I was talking to a co-worker. Button shot off and hit her in the chest. She bent over and handed it to me saying: "I think this is yours."

I've only popped a button accidentally twice, and I've torn a couple armpits (minor tears mind you) if the shirt's snug and I twist and reach up for something. The thing I tend to get more often than not, especially when wearing stretchy knit shirts in the summer is buttons that don't stay closed. They don't pop, but they keep undoing themselves.

I have this black French Connection shirt, mildly form-fitting but still ok for corporate gigs. Last time I wore it while leading a class, everytime I went to go write on the board, the button right around the bottom level of my chest kept sliding out of its hole. I tried pulling on the thread to make it stick out more, I tried squeezing the hole closed, I tried different ways to reach up to the board (overhand, underhand, etc.) but nothing worked. After about the sixth time, someone in the class finally asked "Wardrobe malfunction?"

For the rest of the session, I'd hold the button closed with my left hand while I wrote with my right. I just wear the shirt for casual occasions now.

Dayum. I have TWO [snug] sweaters that I've done this to in the past couple of weeks. It never used to happen to me. I thought it was because they were cheap, but seeing as it happens to other people, I just got a warm fuzzy. I'm just mad 'cuz they were nice sweaters.

That was funny! I hope Janet Jackson didn't do any "adjustments" to your shirt before class

Ok, it's official. Unless it's REALLY stretchy, I cant even fit into anything closely resembling a medium anymore. Even the larges are tight in the shoulder blades on button downs. After 11 years, Mitch and I can finally share wardrobes at least as far as shirts are concerned.

Will someone please alert the media?

dont get too excited. because of the growing waistlines of the popluation, the new trend in clothing manufacturing is called "upsizing" (i believe). meaning that old mediums are the new smalls. the old large is the new medium. so on - so forth. you may be back down to being labeled a medium in no time. ive been a XL for a few years now. several of my new XL - are swimming on me.

Sizing really depends on the manufacturer -- I noticed that with Hawaiian shirts. For Tori Richards' stuff I can wear an XL; Tommy Bahamas, on the other hand, and the mediums are still a bit loose. Just like women's clothing, they upsize the fabric to make men feel better about spending that much on a shirt.

This is a driving force behind some form of standardized sizing in the garment industry. Apparently in Asia and S. America it's the opposite -- some designers down-size their clothes because they don't want heavy people wearing them (contributing to the high incidence of eating disorders).

Classic Rita Rudner joke -- "Somewhere out there is a size 6 so expensive it will fit Nell Carter."

I'm with RadX.

A friend of mine is finding it harder to buy locally produced clothes here in Asia the larger he gets.

I have to actually find something that fits his neckline first before I can consider the darn shirt, for a gift.

Usually its all imported clothes anyways, although the gym bug is catching up really fast here and should be affecting the new trend of muscle shirts and clothes soon enough ... i hope.

I had an awful time buying anything in Japan. There were some awesome T-shirts; I bought size Large (largest I could find), and after washing they were somewhere between Small and Medium US. No way I'll be able to wear them again.

I didn't even bother with the dressier clothes, although the store service was excellent.

Thank you Flexmen for starting this new thread. This is something i always wanted to know about being a muscular guy. I've read most of you have a size trouble on your wardrobe, and could be a big problem on everyday life. But ?what about the funny part of that? For example: ?does anybody used older / small shirts and pants for some muscular display of bigness and strenght trying to split the seams just by flexing? ?Is it difficult?

I'll be very thankful if anyone of you has something to say about ripping clothes...

Twisted the wrong way while wearing a shirt and sweater pullover. Tore the pits out from under them both. The sweater, I'll use now as a vest. The shirt was restitched, pressed and given away. I love growth!
