What Exercises?

Hey there. I'm 5'9" and about 140 pounds. I have wide shoulders and a large-ish waist. A lot of people have told me that I have good potential to build muscle (because of my shoulders,) and so I'm thinking about starting my muscle-building journey. What kind of exercises would you suggest given my body type? Because I have wide shoulders I was thinking of doing lots of shoulder presses and things like that.

Also, I have a naturally big lower body (I used to do cross-country in high school and I walk quite a bit these days,) so I wasn't planning on doing too much lower body work because of that. What do you think?

Don't worry about build and exercise selection yet. The most important thing is to start. Do not neglect legs when lifting--you need an integrated package to grow fully. Stick with basics like bench press, military press, squats, lat press down. Add a few isolation exercise like bicep curls and tricep press downs. As you build strength, you can add deadlifts, dips, and pullups/chins. Also start learning about nutrition as is it key to gaining muscle.

Neglecting Legs

Why would you neglect (or not prioritize) your legs? That is the biggest mistake of beginners!

Also: neglecting abs should be on the list.

Dude, I agree with everyone here; you should just do the basics at first. Concentrate on your whole body, not just bits. Also, remember your stretching!

Exercises you must avoid are ones involving heavy lifting, pulling or pushing. These involve closing off your throat, which only serves to increase abdominal pressure and the size of the hernia.

Hi there, have you tried a natural way of exercise like biking, running nor swimming? I myself is doing a swim workout and it really works for me. Try it and you'll get the result you've wanted.

I think that knowing your body type or what is known as somatotype is very important for you to understand what should be the dietary requirements and how you should be eating and training in order to reap maximum results. Knowing your somatotype will allow you to customise a nutrition and diet plan, training programme that is unique to the particular body type you possess by genetics.
