Oh that's nothing

Here in the UK, the Bank Holiday is always an excuse for a bodybuilder to appear on television in one form or another and here's this year's example

Show: The Best of Benny Hill
Channel: ITV 1
Year of broadcast: 1973

Premise of sketch: An elderly couple (the husband being nagged by the wife) comes across a wishing well. The husband throws a coin in and the wife disappears. Intrigued, he throws another coin in and a model appears and they start to walk off. The model stops and throws a coin in and a male bodybuilder appears. The bodybuilder throws in a coin and the model disappears and he starts to make advances on the husband who throws in another coin and the wife returns.

What is a "Bank Holliday?" Remember, many of us need cultural translation.

One of a number of holidays spaced through the year on which the banks (and most other things) are closed in GB. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bank_Holiday

Yes, but that's not the point. We don't call them "Bank Holidays" over here. We sometimes call them "Postal Holidays" (the post office being a more centrally-organized metric of public servant slackitude), but really we just call them "holidays". Of course, the British call vacations "holidays", so they needed to specify that postal holidays are when the banks go on vacation. Or something.

See also this take on it, from the author of the English-American dictionary (http://english2american.com/). Who's a Scotsman. (Confused yet?)

Hee. OK, OK, here:

For Americans, a vacation is time taken off specifically for yourself and a holiday is time that everyone gets off and they're paid for (Christmas, New Year, Easter, etc.). What Americans call holidays, we call public holidays. In actual fact we call all of them except Christmas and Easter "bank holidays". Scotland and England have bank holidays on different dates, presumably to stop the Scots and English meeting up and fighting in popular seaside towns.
(The dictionary is actually quite extensive and an amusing read, I highly recommend it when you need some time wasted pronto. Like, for tax purposes, or something.)
