cultural responses to muscle men i have a friend who is vacationing with a senior mr. xxxxx bodybuilder in turkey. i got a hysterical email from my friend, from his hotel in istanbul, describing how the turks are responding to the american bodybuilder: J is a star. I?ve never seen anything like it. EVERY man does a double take. They all have to touch and get their picture with him. I have even caught some outright propositions being made ? in a Moslem country! He is in heaven and wants to come back with his gym buddies-soon. Women are careful not to be caught staring at him and stand back as their boyfriends come up to touch and stare. i remember having a body worthy of that kind of attention...it was nice, but took soooooo much work. |

VERY interesting topic! Asians once depicted muscle as an expression of power(demons);but brutish(manual labor was for the lower classes). The early Greeks saw physical culture as self-discipline.Maybe the nazis, too? We seem to have a"hero-oaf"attitude(envious;but big guys MUST be dumb!)In a male-dominated culture, the maler the better? What do you think? |

Very interesting indeed As bodybuilding in the Muslim world is a line that has to be very carefully trodden. Yes, Islam has no problem with people training to keep fit and healthy, but once you are fit, healthy and buff, the same religion prevents you entering competition. __________________ The stronger they are, the more muscled they are |
