Bodybuilding Contests??? Have you been to or plan to attend a Bodybuilding Contest this year? |

Dallasmsl. Good thread subject. I always am surprised at the number of guys I come across on the net who seem pretty interested in muscle or getting built themselves but have never been to a contest or know anything about how, where or when they are held in their area. In the UK contests tend to be almost semi-underground affairs...in very out of the way theatres or odd towns - typically older industrial/blue collar towns around rather than in big glitzy cities. I'd be interested in the US to know what the typical audience at contests is. Here about 95% of the audience are gym buddies or family/friends of the people competing...There is almost no independent audience of people liking the sport but not being connected with the people on stage - at least at the local level. I think part of the problem is lack of publicity - some contests are extremely hard to find out about or book tickets for - it is run on a very amateur basis - eg there will be a private home phone number to call attached to a two line entry on a webpage/forum to enquire about tickets from the promotor. Even basic stuff like start times, dates, prices can be hard to find without phoning the promoter. In the London area the two shows (for the NABBA and EFBB federations - which occur 2 mths apart at the same distant suburb theatre) seemed almost deliberately hard to book tickets for - no credit cards, no use of a box office, all sending checks and money orders to a private address - like the dark ages...no wonder nobody unconnected ever works out how to go. I've tended to act as a one person publicity machine taking along different muscle buddies and training friends along. There's definitely a correlation here in the UK between bodybuilding gyms and "ordinary/industrial/blue collar neighbourhoods in towns. Perhaps because of the higher cost of land you don't tend to get big stand alone gyms in the US that can cater for everything from the bodybuilder to the middle age tone up and dance class brigade. The vogue now is for town centre gyms that are mainly aimed at the fitness crowd with appropriate decor, built as part of a larger development eg offices or residential. In such cases free weights tend to be limited and some deliberately say they don't want big bodybuilder types in the gym. So instead there tend to be a separate haphazard provision of much lower budget "spit and sawdust" type gyms run as one off gyms ANyhow the bodybuilding scene in hte UK is as undeveloped and fringe like as it ever was. Arguably shows have fewer competitors and audience than 10 years ago in my experience. Useful to hear the thoughts of others who live elsewhere. |

The NPC Teen, Collegiate and Masters Bodybuilding National Championship will be in Pittsburgh July 21 and 22. It's a nice show with some hot physiques. Information on competing is http://www.garyudit.com/npc_main.html Repetrope also sells videos from past competitions. Hopefully I can hook up with some friends who come to town for this show. For the past couple of years, I've been away, but I'm actually around this year. I plan to go to the "O" when it's here this October. If several members come, I'd like to have a small party! __________________ God is in the rain. |

You're right UKBeefy. I go to Brierley Hill for the Midlands shows etc and to Southport for Britain and Universe. Odd places to gather and not necessarily easy to get to, but worth the effort for the muscle on display! I'd like to contrast IFBB events with the NABBA ones I've experienced so far. |
