Following my own advice, and starting a new thread, because tekuno said some things that are not accurate and I do not intend to let them stand. Frankly, I think it's hilarious that Tekuno is making a big deal about someone being sarcastic on the internet. I'll freely admit I get prickly and sometimes a little mean, but nnnrg was out of place. I've explained elsewhere why I think so.

I'm gonna start with tekuno's post where he mischaracterized me and did a bunch of other naughty things.

Okay, since we've actually started this, yes, The Magus was the one who was rude and out of line and, Yachirobi, it's uncharacteristically obtuse of you to encourage him.

I may have been rude, in response to greater rudeness, but Yachirobi does not deserve to be called obtuse. He is also allowed to have an opinion, his post did not "encourage" me, and he stayed completely respectful of everyone involved.

There's nowhere on this forum where it says "this is as close as possible to an online party! We love all fetishes! If you have a problem, shut up and go away!" I checked. Twice. (Really.)

No one has to love all fetishes, but an acknowledgement that other people enjoy things that you may not is part of being a decent human being. It isn't in the rules, because decent people in their day to day lives do not go around interrupting conversations to tell everyone what they don't like. They try to understand different perspectives, they allow for difference of taste and opinion, and they know when to let things slide.

If Nnnrg had posted "I don't understand why people like to read about having sex with 12-year-olds, I've met real pedophiles and they're really nasty", we wouldn't even be having this type of discussion because that particular fetish is definitely banned here.

No, I would have made a sarcastic comment about why the hell he brought up 12 year olds out of the blue for no reason. Like I'm doing now. Why did you bring up 12 year olds, dude?????

There are even periodic dead-horse-beatings about it around the forum when borderline cases come up. So claiming "oh, you can't complain about people's fetishes because it makes them have Teh Sads" is just ridiculous right on its face.

Not all fetishes are created equal. Some fetishes involve consequences for people beyond the fetishist. For example, this website will likely NOT be shut down for smoking or scat content, but COULD be shut down for child porn. ALSO, if you cannot see the difference between a redneck, chub, or smoking fetish and one that involves children, there is seriously something wrong with you.

Nnnrg didn't even make his complaint on a story or media thread where people were actually enjoying themselves. Nobody had cold water thrown on them while they were having fun, so there goes The Magus' attempt to justify himself.

Um. My enjoyment of the thread was ruined. I enjoy talking about some of my favourite fetishes, and learning what other people find hot. I do not enjoy watching those people be called gross and disgusting.

He posted on the General thread. This is a discussion, folks. If your discussions never involve dissenting opinions or digressions, then they aren't really discussions and you live a remarkably sterile intellectual life.

It was different than a dissenting opinion or digression. It was a non sequitur. It did not evolve out of the previous discussion. It was one person ignoring the opinions and sensitivities of all previous contributors so that he could randomly say a lot about stuff he doesn't like. It was jarring and offensive.

Furthermore, his post was reasoned and polite, which The Magus is trying to downplay -- probably because The Magus' reply was neither.

It was NOT polite. It was offensive. It was a boatload of negativity that was disrespectful to any number of people in the thread. You don't have to use swear words to be rude. You can be rude and write very eloquently.

The most you can say for his post is "if The Magus isn't the arbiter of people's tastes, then neither is Nnnrg, so there!" But Nnnrg didn't tell anyone to go away, the way The Magus did; he just said he didn't understand particular sub-fetishes and gave reasons why he didn't like them. That's remarkably like -- gasp -- an interesting discussion.

Tell me where I said to go away? Please. Is it where I referred fitness discussions to a fitness forum? Did you know that you're allowed to participate in more than one forum or discussion on the internet? That if you want to talk about something, but the other people around you aren't talking about it yet, you can open a new discussion thread? Don't try to paint me as a ban-happy censor without evidence, please.

And, finally, if we're going to play the "if you don't like it, keep quiet" game, then The Magus is at a bare minimum as guilty as the person he tried to silence. Probably moreso because he was rude as well. If we're pulling out that particular set of daggers, then it's definitely Mutually Assured Destruction.

False equivalency here. I responded to rudeness with more rudeness. It's normal for people to do this. Maybe not commendable but not deserving of your hyperbolic rhetoric.

Is this a tempest in a teapot? You bet. All online forum arguments are. If you stub your toe you'll feel more pain than this whole thing will cause to all parties concerned simultaneously. But Nnnrg wasn't even breaking an unwritten rule, and the idea that it's okay to jump in and tell him to shut up and go away in an extremely rude way -- and to claim that you're doing it in the name of civility! -- is not something I'm inclined to let past.

Please, someone, tell me this is a piece of performance art titled "Internet Drama" or something. All that's missing -- assuming it's really missing; I confess I didn't bother reading all the way through -- is a threat to leave the forum forever if people don't stop being so rude!!!!!1!!!eleven!

Or is Allen Funt going to jump out and say "smile, you're on Candid Internet Forum"? If so, do I win a prize?

Can't tell, but either way, The Magus, you made a typo: given what you're apparently trying to do with this, the word you wanted for the thread name should probably have been "tantrum" rather than "tempest".
