A muscular transformation

I'm a fan of anime and manga, so I was thinking of writing an urban fantasy action story involving some serious muscle growth and magic. There is alot of media where the main character starts off with either no apparent abilities or talent, but turns out to hold an immense amount of hidden potential. I really like some of the stories, but some times the sudden power boosts get really cliche and trying, so I thought of trying something different.

In my story the main character is a magician with very little talent for conventional magic. His fellow magicians can manipulate energy to alter the environment, summon spirits, reconstruct materials, and a slew of other actions. The conventions of the magic world are set and stone, and nobody is allowed to challenge the dogma. Which is why the character will pose a threat. Instead of using magic to manipulate the external world, he is able to manipulate magic and convert it to matter. By doing so, he can grow his muscles to extreme proportions, while gaining super strength, speed, and stamina.

His fellow magicians fear the man because of his extraordinary abilities. They can use magic to manipulate the environment, but can't create mass. Magicians can create ice by slowing down the movement of water molecules, or shoot out fire by igniting a spark and adding energy to it, but they can't actually create anything. The guy is from the start powerful, so a council of magicians decide they want him dead because he poses a threat to the status quo.

The story will detail he adventures as he faces the various magical beings attempting to kill him. Please provide feedback, by positng.

This has promise. I picture him accompanied by some mages who want to learn how to do what he can do, likely so they can give themselves bigger muscles or something like that.
