Myostatin Test I was wondering if someone could tell me if there is a simple blood test to see if a child has this myostatin blocker naturally. A frined of mine and me beleive his son may have it. So if it can be determined by a simple blood test then he wants to pursue it. Any info is appreciated. |

The test will be hard to get unless there is good evidence of something unusual. If there is, the Johns Hopkins lab would probably be intersted in there are only enough known cases to count on ones hand. In addition, the natural condition is not the production of a blocker, but instead the failure to make a proper form of myostatin in the first place. The test itself would be a simple gene test for something specific that they know of, or it would simply be a test of myostatin concentration in the body. Either way though, it is extreemly unlikely that the child has it. Generaly speaking, both parents would have to have one copy of the miscoded gene. Talking about this is one of the few ocasions that my biomedical engineering studies come in handy here. Have an excelent day. |
