Jay Cutler video

I got the Cutler DVD: "New, Improved and Beyond." It is two DVDs, but there isn't much on the second one; they should have edited it down to one. It is mostly training footage, and pretty boring after a while. It doesn't help that Jay has all the personality of a clam, and a droning, nasal, monotonous voice. He seems like a nice guy, but charismatic? No.

He is, however, huge on this DVD; hard, but not ripped. Very full, and yet his waist is still tight. There are times when his size and proportions take your breath away. His chest in particular seems much more impressive than it does when he is contest-ready; huge, hanging slabs of pec-meat!

There are no great training revelations. He does the same things everyone else does; just more often and more consistently. As with many of the pros, he goes much higher on his reps than current training "science" would have us believe is correct. His diet is boring in the extreme: rice, broccoli and chicken for the most part.

I can never quite decide how I feel about guys who are capable of sticking to this lifestyle year-in and year-out. Am I filled with admiration? Or do I think they must be mentally very limited to be able to settle for such a desperately dull life? In any case, I am in awe fo the results!

So, do I recommend this DVD? If you are a big Jay fan, sure; that body has never looked more impressive, and that is why we buy these things, right? Not to mention it helps to pay for the bodies we love to look at. Just be prepared to fast-forward through a lot of the repetitive training, and Jay's tedious monologues.

Ok, since you brought it up....

I ask myself the same thing. I spend a lot of time working out & working on my physique (diet, etc) but I can't even aspire to the extremes that these guys accomplish. That's something like 2 or 3 orders of magnitude more than I am capable of.

I've been trying to reconcile the ideas that the traits that allow one to really excel at bodybuilding also cluster with a lot of really unhealthy stuff. Argh!

So, I'm still looking for that built lumberjack with a MS degree who can communicate about feelings and ideas.

Any takers? <G>

I agree with your review... I'm a big Cutler fan and I was disappointed with the DVD too. It's actually 3 DVDs though. I picked up a copy at the Mr. Olympia Expo last year and couldn't wait to get back to my hotel room and watch it on my laptop. I found myself fast-forwarding through 95% of it.

There are a few good scenes though. I liked seeing big Jay strip down to his skivies in the gym for some posing. And there's a good interview with Jay's massage therapist who says that when he first started, Jay had warned him that this would be the largest body he had ever worked on. He had to come up with new techniques to get better message to properly handle Jay's enormous physique.

So turn the sound off and watch it in the dark...

RPJ, here I thought I knew you. I've read your stuff and I know you know the rules of BBFML (Bodybuilding Fantasy markup language).

You NEVER close a <Wide> tag with </wide>. That would indicate the end of <wide> and we never END being wide, unless we're involved in a "theft" story.

The correct way to write things is:
<wide>
<wider>
<wider>
<wider>

Some variation is okay as long as the meme is consistent and the parser can understand it:
<Big>
<bigger>
<creak>
<pop>

As penance you'll have to do 12 extra sets of crunches at your next workout!

LOL; yes, the mute button is handy when watching these videos. And also the fast-forward.

BBFML:

I can't find any schema for BBFML. However, I did find this:
Quote:
XML tags are case sensitive
Unlike HTML, XML tags are case sensitive.

With XML, the tag <Letter> is different from the tag <letter>.

Opening and closing tags must therefore be written with the same case:

<Message>This is incorrect</message>

<message>This is correct</message>
at w3schools.com

Maybe the geekier members here should conspire to formalize BBFML?

Thanx for a good laugh Ry!
Brent.
