How to save FLV videos from any site...

Intermediate (If you're constantly saving Youtube + Google Videos)
1 - Get Firefox
2 - Install the FastVideoDownload add-on
3 - Restart Firefox
4 - Click on the FastVideoDownload icon on the bottom right of the browser window whenever you're on a Youtube video you want to save. (There's a bug that may require you to click it more than once).

Advanced (Save any FLV video from ANY website)
1 - Get Firefox
2 - Install the Video DownloadHelper add-on
3 - Restart Firefox
4 - Navigate to any page which has Flash video. As the video is buffering/playing, go to the Tools menu and select the DownloadHelper item in the pop-up menu. It will reveal a sub-menu that lists the current FLV streams that Firefox is currently downloading.
5 - If there is more than one FLV file listed, select the file name in the list that has the icon of the "weight" next to it. This is DownloadHelper's best guess as to which file is the actual video file vs place-holder files which have no visual data. If there is more than one FLV file and you're not sure which one to pick, it may be necessary to take a guess and to look at which one has the largest filesize. (Anything over 100k would definitely be a video file)
6 - You'll then be prompted to save the FLV file to your hard drive.


To Play back FLV files
On Mac: Install the free Perian add-on for Quicktime which allows you to use Quicktime Player to play any FLV file. You'll be able to take advantage of Quicktime Player's features such as looping and slow-motion playback. If you have Quicktime Pro you'll also be able to convert the FLV file to other video formats. The Free VLC player, which you may have heard of, absolutely sucks with FLV playback.

On Windows: There are a ton of FLV players out there, but I'm not sure which ones have slow mo capability. In any case, I recommend this one.

Choose "Activity" from the "Window" menu. This will open a window listing every file which is used in all the current pages, including images and movies. Find the entry for the video you want. This may require clicking on some of the little triangles along the left side of the window. When you find the line you want, hold down the option key and double-click on it. (The file will download to whatever your default folder is for downloads. In 10.5, that's the Downloads folder in your user directory by default.)

(You may have to rename the file to end with ".flv", though. For some reason, Safari likes to add extra extensions to some of these files.)

Also, if you want to convert your FLV to AVI file (medium quality, about twice the size in MB), you can use FLV to AVI converter. (you can find it anywhere, I can send it by mail to whom who may want it)

There's also a site called Zamzar

it can take almost any video URL, and convert it to most video or audio files. GREAT site if you see a musclegrowth video and you want to save it.

You'll have to provide the email, and it may take a little while to convert the file, and you'll have to check your email ASAP, as it only holds the file for one day *unless you sign up, which costs money*

Realplayer worked for about 2 years for me and then went to hell. The downloader that I used which was simply open it when you wanted to steal the vid you were watching stopped working. Realplayer's downloader went from letting me get stuff from Xtube and anything I wanted, to only YouTube, and now it doesn't let me get crap.

Real sucks.
