Obama now president Barack Obama, on 5th November 2008, has become the 44th president of the United States of America. On 20th January 2009, he shall occupy the white house. In the elections he gained 324 electoral college votes. The massive scale of the elections was awe-imspiring in my view. I'm not American, but I wish him luck in his policies that will be carried out. As his motto says, "Time for change!" |

Not to quibble (but doing so anyway...) He's won the election; he's the President-Elect. He won't actually become the 44th President of the United States until the day he takes office, January 20, 2009. If (God forbid) something happened to him between now and then, someone else would wind up being the 44th President of the United States (and I don't want to speculate; that's an entirely murky concept.) xoxo Richard |

Succession Quote:
If, God forbid, a President-elect were to die before taking office, in this case, the Vice President elect would step in. The order of succession after that is specified in the Constitution, and, (bear with me here, since I don't have time to research it) names the Speaker of the House, followed by other officials in the "line of succession". Such an eventuality has never happened so far, and hopefully, will remain an academic question for the foreseeable future. Mdlftr Last edited by Mdlftr; November 7th, 2008 at 06:01 AM. |

Actually, it's even murkier than that; the line of succession doesn't actually kick in until (a) the Electoral College votes (mid December) or (b) the new Congress (Jan. 6) certifies the Electoral College vote. For more details, see the Explainer column in Slate: http://www.slate.com/id/2201173/ xoxo Richard |

Well, to be honest with you, this is going to be a potentially life-threatening term for Obama, the amount of rage by many white groups is quite large, from what I heard, there is a 30% chance of him being killed while in office |

And as far as the ass backwards people of the world, thinking about assasinating someone simply because of their race is not only ignorant but barbaric. C'mon, this is supposed to be the 21st Century and we are supposed to be past dragging our knuckles in this stupid archaic thinking about race. We are all the same as we all bleed RED!!!! And if it does happen, it will be a call to all of the decent people of the world to mobilize against such stupidity IMO. Yes, it is time for change! D |

I'm not American but the people from there that I chat with regularly talks a lot about the racism in the US still at large. =============== ...I suppose it's all relative. Compared to the U.S., most countries treat their minorities (North Africans in France, Pakistanis in Britain for instance, Japanese towards Koreans, and anyone else) like dirt, and don't see anything wrong with it. The U.S. has a long history of facing problems head on and dealing with them, while many other countries ignore them. [Pollution in China, religious and gender identity intolerance in the Middle East for example] For all its issues, the U.S. is still the model that most other countries look to, either to praise or to villify.
