Best chest exercise

Not to disparage bench pressing its a great overall strength builder but I have come to the conclusion that weighted dips are the best chest exercise----Feel free to agree or disagree

If you love weighted dips...

If you love weighted dips (and I do), try this: superset them with shoulder shrugs using a straight bar. If you're like me it'll actually potentiate your dips, opening up your shoulders/traps and you'll be able to crank out More and/or heavier dip sets. I cycle thru dips/shrugs in place of bench for a week or two every so often and find upon return to the almighty bench that I've gotten stronger. Plus I love the idea guys are aware of me (and
staring at me) doing dips with a couple of 45s hanging from my waist.
Post back if you try it and it works for you too.

Chest exercises to consider: pulleys

I've been using pulley cross overs. (Not sure of the "official" name)

You stand in front of the pulley apparatus. There are two versions of this exercise. Both involve pulling your arms across your chest, and are intended to really hit the center of your chest where your pecs attach.

Starting with the arms down at your sides, elbows slightly bent, draw your arms up in front of you until your fists meet out in front of you, just over your head height. This works center and lower and outer edges of your pecs.

Another version of this exercise starts with your arms up in the air over your head. You deliberately draw each arm down, one at a time across your torso, going left arm to right side, right arm to left side. This hits center and upper pecs.

Both of these pulley exercises REALLY hit my center pecs in a way the flat and incline BP do not. The variety really shocks my chest into growing!

Actually the best chest work out that will really help bulk out the pecs Is heavy weighted dips done in a slow deliberate motion---ten seconds on the up movement. Followed by cable crossovers, and preceded by a shoulder workout that includes straight bar shoulder shrugs, I also like heavy shoulder presses, and lateral raises with dumbells. This is basically my chest shoulders workout now.

Chest Advice

re: MdLftr

Thanks for the suggestion! I've had similar dissatisfaction w/BP's at every angle, i.e. hitting the interior of my pecs. I used your cable suggestion today as a secondary muscle exercise (legs were primary today) and I really felt the burn in the interior of my pecs. I am adding it to the arsenal..

The chest press works the major muscles of the chest, shoulders and triceps.Pushups work almost every muscle in the body with an emphasis on the chest and arms.

Personally I love the dumbbell fly. It gives the pecs a real stretch, especially after the benchpress. I like dips too, but I can't do weighted ones in my gym.
