Ok, this is an example of how subjective "nerd" is. I definitely think of beards (especially neck beards) as being very nerd-centric accouterments. Think George R. R. Martin D&D style nerd rather than protractor-nerd.

Typically I think of nerdy as smart/informed + obsessive + socially awkward. If they are missing one of those then they aren't nerds to me. But obviously it is a word very much in flux.

The above is a good example of a nerd: the cosplayer. More often than not, muscular cosplayers are doing a shirtless cosplay. (Leonidas from 300, Conan, etc.) Good to see a guy who can pull off Captain America without using padding.

The word "nerd" was usually meant to describe someone that looked different or like things that was considered uncool or wasn't part of pop culture eg. comics, academics, sci-fi, etc. But now a days those thing are part of pop culture because of medias like movies and TV. Most ppl that are considered "jocks" are into sci-fi and comics and because of today's competitive workforce ppl have to focus more academics if they want to have a successful life. And today they're so many different styles of clothing that there really isn't a set style of what makes a person cool. It more of how they present themselves. And more and more ppl wear glasses that it's not something so uncommon that someone get considered a nerd for it.

I know I probably ranting so I sorry it's kinda my thing lol.
