Lifting cars with Benadryl

So I've run across this interesting phenomenon. In brief: Benadryl in recreational doses makes the user temporarily stronger. If one cap makes you woozy, try lifting with three or four in you. Assuming you don't fall over (try it on machines first!), it's been my experience that you'll be able to perform at your absolute limit faster, and do so for more reps with less rest.

The mechanism for this is apparently suppression of the parasympathetic nervous system. This is the bit of your nervous system that handles 'resting and digesting', and also complements the sympathetic ('fight-or-flight' response) nervous system. It also seems to act as part of the built-in limiter that prevents us from, say flexing our quads hard enough to break the femur. (Which has happened in cases of electrical shock.) So, when it's taken offline or suppressed, it basically unlocks one's 'full potential'. Without chemical aid, this is usually only seen after crazy mental training or in cases of extreme panic, as in the story of an average woman lifting a rolled-over car off her child.

I've personally experienced this effect several times now, and it's most of what keeps me coming back to the stuff. Given that, I've learned to expect roughly a 10-20% increase in one-rep max weight, working weight, and reps to exhaustion at 'normal' working weight. I'm unsure of exact numbers mostly because I don't have a wide selection of weights at home, so precision is difficult.

Anyway - try it out, let the community know if it's a useful training tool. More information for the studious is available at http://www.erowid.org/pharms/diphenhydramine/ .

PS: after the workout, try orgasming. The muscles responsible for that are similarly enhanced in their response.

And now, the word of caution

Diphenhydramine has sedative properties and is widely used in nonprescription sleep aids with a maximum recommended dose of 50 mg (as the hydrochloride salt) being mandated by the U.S. FDA. In the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, and other countries, a 50?100 mg recommended dose is permitted

Thanks for the reminder. I kinda got caught up in the initial post.

Needless to say: don't operate heavy machinery or enter into binding legal contracts while under the influence. Reaction time, mental agility, short-term memory, and fine muscle control are in my experience significantly degraded while under the influence, and a trip usually lasts 6-12 hours. Processing the stuff slows way down during sleep, so don't expect to wake up 10 hours later and not feel somewhat sedated.
