Cool story... I really like the confusion in Simon's mind between the old and new Simon. You need to be care with it though... you need to ask yourself if the old Simon still exists and do you want to let him tune the final form of the new Simon. Since old Simon is smarter than new Simon that maybe a good thing... I bring this up because I got the impression that the old Simon is fading rapidly.

The voice of the old Simon in the back of new Simons more muscle bound mind will give you a rational control on the new Simon that will give access back into the "You Got Male" site so you fix new Simon's flaws... I think that will give you a lot more control over where you can take the story. If new Simon can't work the 'You Got Male' site or gets rid of the computer you're going to be stuck with a big dumb jock with out much of a future.

I like the "detatchment" from what's happening. It's reading like Simon hasn't made the connection from what's happening to him with the program, yet. Also, along the lines of Ender's point, DOES Simon ever figure out what's going on and how does he react? Lots of ways to take that. Or, does he just change?

For what it's worth... This is where I think the story is now...

Simon gets a strange email that offers to change his life. He figures it's a joke but follows the link to a web site that allows him design the guy he thinks he wants to be... And like most people, he doesn't fully read the directions and warnings, or think about what he really wants in life. And is careless in setting up the profile for the new Simon. He submits his desired profile and "You Got Mail" starts to remake Simon and the reality he lives in.

As the new Simon profile comes on-line Simon finds himself drifting between his old self and the imperfect Jock Stud profile he is becoming and falls asleep. When he wakes up "You Got Male" rework on Simon is complete... And Simon certainly "Got a lot More Male" When Simon first wakes up the are a few moments of the old Simon being confused and paniced finding himself in a different body but quickly the new Simon takes control and Simon the Musclehead is born...

Ahh... but you haven't released the twist from its cage, yet. I was just recap'ing. There isn't really enough info for a projection yet and I generally try to aim away from where I think things will actually go. But once-in-a-while trying to miss an unseen target will result in a bullseye.

Right now there are only three (or 2.5) characters, Old and New Simon and the "You Got Mail" system (I suspect it has an adgenda for reshaping the world and Simon in particular... or it should) so the possible conflicts aren't easy to read.

I see two different direction for this story as a series, one is to focus on the Simon character. The other is to make it an anthology like Aardvark2's "'Photo Booth" series where you focus on the "You Got Mail" system rewritting peoples lives. What nice about this setup is that the 'victim/subject' here gets a say in his transformation and perhaps a chance to escape, (in "Photo Booth" people get recompiled at the wim of the "Photo Booth god.") Of course having input into your transformation doesn't mean you'll get what you want or ask for.

I sort of like the idea Ender elaborated; that this become a series revolving around different people getting the chance to remake themselves, and become more than they bargained for; they have a chance to stop it, but because of a fatal flaw in their personalities, neglect to do so (someone so obsessed with how they look that they want to keep going end up losing a relationship that made them want to look good in the first place, etc.)

Thanks for liking my idea... Maybe, if TattCub is agreeable, he would continue "You Got Male: Simon's Story" and open the "You Got Male" universe to other writers too...

The thing I like about the format is that the Subject of the transformation does it to himself... So he only has himself to blame if it it goes badly and he becomes a victim rather than beneficiary.

Another idea that could come into play is "equivalent (or not so equivalent) exchange"... everything has a price but it's a sliding scale... a guy in a wheel chair that asks to walk again would gets that and being a stud too without much if any loss; but a rich good looking guy that asks for a lot more muscle may gets it but ends up pennyless or a drooling imbelcile... unless he "punches out" of the transformation before it completes (I'm a big fan of the idea of Karma... but they should have a way out although not necessarily without some loss. )
