A Record-Keeping Quandry

Today I finally progressed from the assisted dip machine (or "dips with training wheels") to doing regular dips- a real milestone for me. So when I went to record the workout on my iPhone gym app, I typed in reps:10, weight:0.

Weight:0??? That didn't look so good for such a major change in my triceps workout. I'm a big guy- hauling all of me up and down for 10 reps should look better than that.

So I considered entering my body weight so it would have read "weight:250." THAT would have looked better but when I remembered that I would be using weights hanging from a belt as I progress (that thought makes me all tingly!), I could run into bookkeeping problems with approach.

I even tossed around the idea of entering "my fat ass" in the weight category, but there wasn't enough room.

So I left it at weight:0 and decided I would just have to run the victory lap in my mind.

Sigh... but it's still a milestone.

If you can type letters in, then type BW. It's a common shorthand for "body weight", and you can then extend it to weighted movements by adding the extra weight - so, you might have reps:10, weight:BW+20, meaning body weight plus an extra 20 of whichever unit you use (pounds or kilograms, that is).

Mdlftr will become famous soon enough
conversely, if you use machines to assist you with a dip, you can record that also.
If you get 130# of support from an assisted dip machine for 3 sets of 20 reps,

Assisted dips : 3 X 20 @ 130#

I've just decided to record any added weight, now that I'm actually doing dips with added weight (did 3 x 10 at 10 lbs yesterday. Yes!!!).

It does feel great to do real dips rather than assisted ones.

Congrats on adding weight...what a cool feeling! If your bodyweight stays fairly constant, your approach will be fine. My weight changes a good bit. So if I were logging 10lbs added to my bodyweight (228), I would put 238x10, for example. The important thing is for the information to be useful to you. Hope you have to get your calculator out for all of that weight you'll be adding!
