I woke up the next morning wandering what challenges were gonna come my way today. When I woke up I was a little disoriented, and my memory of last night was a little fuzzy. So as I did my usual morning stretch, I fell on the ground.

"Ow..." I hit my elbow on the coffee table in the den. I stood up and looked where I was sleeping. Apparently, I fell asleep on the couch. There was a blanket on the ground that must have been around me. Who put it there? "Dad?" I called around the house. "Dad?" Where was he?

"I told you, Alex. Dad's not coming back." I heard Ryan say. I turned around and say Ryan standing on the staircase still in his blue footie pajamas. "When are you going to believe me?" He had a solemn look on his face. "Dad's gone, and I'm going to have to care of you from now on. Well... not yet, but I will have to." It was so weird hearing Ryan talk like that. He was normally always in a cheerful mood, and he's never called our father, "Dad."

All of what happened the previous night rushed back to me. "I guess I'm going to have to believe you..." I said. "Dad never picked up the phone last night." Then I did the unthinkable. I broke down, sat on the couch and cried. I just let all my tears come forward. I never cried like that in front of Ryan. When I looked up from my hands, Ryan was standing over me with a slight frown. That just made me cry harder. My little brother shouldn't have a frown on his face.

"You know he loves us," Ryan said. "But mom told him this was going to happen. Mom told him he was going to have to leave." At this, I looked up at my little brother again with a confused look on my face. What was he saying? Did mom have a plan set out for everything after she died? I really looked at Ryan's face. His green eyes sparkled and he had a sly smirk on his face now. "I can tell you're thinking of something. What is it, big bro." He said the world "big" as if he didn't fully believe in it.

"You're lying. Mom hasn't been talking to you, has she?"

"No. But I did have you going for a while, didn't I?"

"RYAN JAMES WRIGHTMAN. THAT'S NOT FUNNY." I screamed at my brother. He immediately frowned.

"I'm sorry, Alex! I didn't know it would hurt you so much."

"You didn't think it would hurt me? Are you joking? YOU'RE MAKING JOKES ABOUT OUR DEAD MOTHER. What is WRONG with you!?"

"Nothing!" A tear was falling from his right eye. "Nothing is wrong with me! Why don't you you just go to work already! I'm tired of you yelling at me!" He was right... I was yelling at him so much more lately.

"Fine!" I quickly showered, got dressed, and left. Before I went through the door I looked back at Ry. He looked bigger somehow. "You know what? I'm going to be an hour early if I leave right now. How about some breakfast?" I needed to talk to him about what was happening.

"Sure." He agreed. He still looked a little peeved at me.

After I made a nice omelet for breakfast, we sat on opposite ends of the table. If I was going to ask him the questions that I needed to ask him, now was the time.

"So.. Ryan. I need to ask you some questions about what's going on." I said as calmly as I could. "Is that okay?"

"Whatever." Now that he was full, his temper cooled down quite a bit.

"Okay. So. What exactly is going on with you? You seem bigger than before we had our argument!"

"That's because I am. Apparently anger fuels my aging."

"How much do you think you weight now?"

"Oh. Well. I'm definitely at 100 pounds now." Wow. Ten pounds just from being angry at me. "I'm almost twelve years old too." He smiled.

"Wait. What?"

"I told you, Alex. I'm getting older. You know how my birthday was May 31st 2001?"

"Yeah. You're turning twelve in exactly eleven months." Today was June 31st 2012.

"Well. Not anymore. My birthday moved to July 31st 2000. I'm turning twelve in... well. I guess not a month, since I'm aging faster. Anyway. Alex, I've already aged ten months." I understood what he meant, but it was still unbelievable.

"When are you going to be thirteen?"

"Well... At the rate I'm growing, a week. And I'll be older than you in about a month, maybe even sooner. I'll stop aging when I'm around 21, the peak of my potential."

"What's the real reason why this is happening to you?"

"Do you want the honest truth, Alex?"

"Yes."

"I want and need to protect you. I can't stand being your little brother. I can't stand being the small one. I want to be older, and stronger, and bigger than you."

"Oh." That was all I could say. What else am I supposed to say to that? "How?"

"Well. Because I want it so much. I want it as much as I need my next breath, and it just started happening." That covered all my questions, except one.

"Why did dad leave?" Immediately I could tell I hit a nerve when I said that. My brother tensed up.

"I told him everything I told you, and he got scared and ran away. Dad left because he was scared of me." He then slowly stood up, placed his plate and fork in the sink, went to his room and closed the door. I took that as my cue to head for work.
