Story Commissions So a thought crossed my mind. For many of the artists in the image section and from sites like Deviant Art, you can make requests for images to be created as long as you provide specifics. Some artists just offer to do it, and others request repayment, in whatever form is agreed upon, (money or artwork in return). But we don't do these stories? In theory it shouldn't be too dissimilar, provide the premise, agree on a limit to the amount that's produced, discuss further if needed then produce the end result. Or is it more complicated than that? __________________ Lightning - "Find your own road to hell" Sketches and doodles: http://blazefiresabre.deviantart.com |

I have done several commission stories (I don't charge because no one should ever pay for the crap that comes out of my mind ), it is fun to write for someone, but only if you care about the guy, because otherwise it just gets mechanical. Many of my stories have been illustrated by great artists and I actually feel this collaboration is the best thing in the world! Well, that being said, we have to admit that the worst part of commission is the wait, and unlike the art stuff, where you can actually see the creation process and even ask for alterations, a story has to be delivered at once, so the reader still have that fresh feeling to it, not that he doesn't already know the theme and the things that might happen, but it's always nice to keep some cards up the sleeves Just my two cents __________________ There's no such thing as TOO BIG! |

Accepting commissions for stories is alright in itself, minus the payment. Maybe an incredibly great author can get away with selling his work, but that's highly unlikely given the amount of text in the stories on this site. Selling a story commission just seems in bad taste. Now if it were a flash story accompanied by art pertaining to the story, then yes, selling it would be ok. But selling commissions if it were just text. . . Not so much. |

I'm a bit surprised that anyone would expect to receive a commissioned story for free, after all, that's why it's called a commissioned story. On the other hand, if an author is open to requests, and is willing to use their time and talent to create a special story, that's their prerogative. Writing is similar to other creative arts. In painting one must understand perspective, color, design, and have the talent to combine them in meaningful ways. Just because an author uses words to do the same doesn't make it any less valuable. That being said, it really is up to the two people involved. If the requester is willing to pay/barter for a story, and the author agrees, so be it. It's between them. There are many very talented authors on this site who use words to paint amazingly wonderful scenarios. Many thanks to them for sharing their artwork with us. |
