Except the term faggot, fag and even sometimes gay holds a lot more negativity than the "n" word does.. I'm gay and fag/faggot is always an insult in my opinion, unless you're British and talking about cigarettes.

Well bigbearny, perhaps there is a reason for why those terms still have a negative impact on some people...

You know, it was very clever what the African American community did some time ago to greatly lessen the impact of the "n" word on them. They started to use this word in their everyday vocabulary. Today we see many African American rap artists using the "n" word in their lyrics, and now ironically, many people that may have in the past used this word as a means to ostracise African Americans from the greater community, are now enjoying this music.

In essence, what the African American community has done is remove the power and the "sting" that this word once had, by using it openly and therefore showing that they are now not as affected by it's use.

30 years ago this would have been a different story, and the "n" word would have very much offended our African American friends. So perhaps, using this history as a blueprint, we as a community should adopt this same strategy, and perhaps in the not too distant future, these terms will not offend you in the same way they do today.

A good start would be for you to welcome your guests at your next dinner party with the phrase "sup fag".

Lets move forward.

Wow... this really has turned into an interesting discussion with some very intelligent comments. Let's face it, there are valid arguments on either side of this one.

@Yachirobi... I respect your views completely. My hope is that the terms "fag" or "nigga" used by persons who aim to invoke disdain or hatred does not hurt you personally or make you feel any less than equal. It is this very abhorrent behaviour that we as a community need to break down using any means at our disposal. The so-called "reclaiming" of these terms may be a start. By allowing these terms to impact us negatively serves only to allow these bastards to continue to see that, by their use of these terms towards us, they are successfully breaking our spirits and ostracising us from the greater community.

@Ogun... It bothers me that under-educated bigots are still able to hurt our community by using these terms as a weapon against us. I do believe that it is high time that we diffuse these hurtful terms by showing these disrespectful people that their words of hatred no longer have the negative impact they once had.

I think that this intelligent discussion is worth continuing.
