Mr OLYMPIA 2195

MR OLYMPIA 2195 (original novel by Joxok)... Enjoy

200 to 300 kg of finely oiled meat mountains can barely drag slowly their feet on the timber of the auditorium's stage, they are too weak to move their own bodyweight around comfortably, but lights are off, no one will notice the struggle, once on stage all the contestants perform all their flex show with the fake suspense moment for the winner choice, then, as soon as the curtain falls, they crawl back to the big van door open in a corner of the backstage, silently the door of the van closes, and silently the van starts to move, to bring the 30 "bodybuilders" back to the lab. The mineral balance of their bodies is so fragile to keep them along in contest shape without risking, their skin can be ripped away leaving an open door to infections, or simply they could faint, damaging themselves under the weight of their own bodies?. and each bodybuilder is worth millions ...of work and time, more expensive than a racing car?.

?But this is the reason why in 2195 bodybuilding is still a big show, there are men on that stage, real persons that devoted their life to make of their only bodies unique works of art, there is real human flesh under the spotlights and human blood pulsating in the intricate vein webs spreading all over the surface of their unreal bulging bodies, veins jumping under those thin transparent polished shiny skins almost as they were sticking out to plunge back inside soon after.

From the end of the eighties, just two centuries after its golden era, bodybuilding can't find place in real life, nobody wants to become a bodybuilder, like no one wanted to become a gladiator in ancient Rome. Aside from rare cases of dysmorphic individuals no one would be choosing bodybuilding as a sport anymore, the few gyms still featuring a full bodybuilding equipment are deserted, muscle dysmorphia patients are now treated with a successful medication, so you still can rarely find some old bigorexic dropping the dust off barbells and plates, and lifting.

To sell their products the companies still need a show where to promote their business, so, with no bodybuilder around anymore the activity of pro bodybuilder is usually proposed to the less fortunate member of the society: homeless, poor, ex convicts? people that have not much to loose embracing professional bodybuilding to successfully escape a life of misery.

As long as in a decent shape, and all the limbs attached to their body... anyone can be easily and quickly turned into a professional bodybuilder, since the discovery of the protein synthesis catalyser its possible to produce in a human body up to one kg of lean mass per a day. The applicants, once contract is signed, are led in a secret hi-tech bio lab financed by Weider as well as several other business partners, and immediately sedated, they will kept this way for about 3 months more or less, depends on the specific case, at the end of the synthesis period they wake up with 90kg of extra muscle. Longer periods are used from time to time to build up a subject into a larger 300kg muscle freak, only the individuals with already a basic solid frame can face the "supersizing" procedure. It's not an armour, once built you can't take it off.

After the inner bulk of muscle is ready the bodies are asristically chiseled: a 3d inkjet bioprinter prints extra muscle fibers layers around the freshly produced muscle, its jet is so powerful that operation is possible through the pores of the skin of the subject, getting rid of any post surgery recovery time, no cuts, no scars, this process is important to give a pleasant shape, the best one, to the massive muscles synthesized before by the protein synthesis catalysation, fake separations and bellies are designed on cad then embedded in the muscle under the skin of the subject.

the contract presented to the subjects includes some brain manipulation, which shortens the learning time, the ex miserable will need to learn to behave as real pro bodybuilders, a dummy gym is set inside the lab, plates are just scene items, weighting circa one tenth than how heavy they look, the subjects are all taken there for filming and commercial photoshoots, they will perform the exercises but their strength is not as big as their muscles, as most part of those muscles is not functional to an actual lift, they simulate a real contraction but fibers orientation falls far away from the bone angle when they reach it, fibers dangerously close to a 90 degree angle when reaching the bone have been put there to simulate a muscle growth that would not happen in the real life as they are not in the right position to pull an arm or a leg in the direction requested by the articulation itself.

The photoshoots and the videos are crafted with ancient art, imitation of reality is flawless, no one can imagine what's behind the Olympia show... still out there they believe that real bodybuilders with years of training experience are doing the real thing... its just fiction, in the very beginning a secret commercial agreement prevented the truth from leaking out. what the public sees is a perfect footage and perfect images of real bodybuilders preparing for one of the most popular and important contests of this type and also one of the very few still running!

Alongside with brain manipulation the subjects get also the good old ECT or electroshock on a daily basis, during their long sedation, after a case of rebellion the management determined brain functions of the subjects must be limited and every unwanted stimulation must be zapped away. while preparing to the "contest" the subjects are kept awake generally 3 hours a day, just the time to workout, receive instructions and routine medical check, then immediately sedated to let the technicians to perform force feedings, injections, IV nutrition and ECT. During sedation bio artists mind to scrub or laser correct the skin, which then is artificially thinned to let the details of muscle and veins exposed as much as possible during the show, this makes the bodybuilders very fragile, even hitting their skin with a nail would rip it off like an old tissue paper, but they must be looking almost skinless in front of the public.

The winner is decided by the committee long before the contest would start, that gives time to the technicians to program the features that will make the champion win, more separation, definition harmony, shape, definition? its all programmed on CAD and printed around the new muscle tissue under the skin of the lucky winner, so he will clearly look better than the others it must convince people that the jury judged the event correctly in a fair way.

the fragile bodies of the bodybuilders are now ready to show live, since they managed to make a matter of programming, all the features of the athletes are finely sculpted in their bodies, some guys have been bulked up to almost 300kg, every detail of the show is put there to impress, but every detail is precisely placed in place and time to cause the most emotional reaction achievable from the audience in the hall and everywhere else.

Those living sculptures built on real human bodies are wrapped by a fragile layer of skin artificially thinned, too dangerous to apply oil by hand, a robot machine will spray them as if it was painting car bodies in the factory, and delivering a perfect job: the contestants will walk on stage shiny, detailed, with brand new cute faces designed by the plastic surgeon, how could the audience not fall in love with them? ...but the security will never let anyone get too close to those champions, too risky for the safety and the confidentiality of the operation.

the posing routines are the only real effort the pseudo-bodybuilders have to perform, they have been instructed by professional choreographers equipped by a remote control, the remote operates an electric collar locked on the neck of each contestant, every mistake in the rehearsals would have triggered a painful electrical chock, with an intensity increasing at every shot. this allowed the artistic management to get the routines and other possible moments of acting ready in a reasonably short time, no one would have put attention in how perfect was the acting of some bodybuilders, but all must have been mesmerized from how they looked. and the perfection of those altered human bodies on stage is sublime and perfect to the eyes of who sits in the first row.

the illusion is ready to show, the reality of 30 ex miserable biologically modified, bulked up with an heavy extra burden of useless muscle to drag around, mentally reprogrammed, electroshocked daily, ans sometimes electrocuted, made overly physically fragile for scenic reason and obviously doped to improve the performance on stage? turns into an exciting live show with previously programmed improvisations, surprises, suspense and finale,

Who knows how many years this has been going on, no one will know this is going on, when nothing turns up to be real, everything can become possible...

Wow, that's creepy and evil. Too bad they don't lay the fibers in correctly...

only a limited number of fibers can be attached to a bone termination to follow the orientation of that bone, but when the muscle becomes a big muscle there is too much crowd of fibers, the volume of the inner ones prevents the outer ones to attach with the correct orientation, its like you want to open a door pulling a rope attached to the handle but you are close to the wall, tension is there, the orientation is wrong, the door doesn't open. What we notice in the pros at the present day is that some muscles are so overdeveloped that the outer fibers can end up setting themselves at a 45 degree angle compared to the plan of bone, now those fibers will struggle to do the same thing that the inner ones do naturally correctly, put yourself 45 degrees from the wall, you struggle but in the end you open the door.

Creepy? Evil? yes... but I would say certainly not impossible, details of the novel are based on the projections science and biology have delivered in a time even longer than 50 years regarding events and trends somehow related to bodybuilding, it is creepy and sad only if they will actually make it happen, but also the social scenario is kind of developed on projections, 50 years ago there was a lot of manual work, now we have IT, the future might socially turn even lifting heavy objects into something anachronistic, unpractical, and overtaken by civilization habits (if i need to get warm in the city its unlikely for me thinking in 2013 i could go cutting the trees to get some wood to burn and heat my unit)

So bodybuilding can disappear as a popular mass activity, like for example playing the violin now is not as popular as it was in Austria in 1700, when its popularity as a leisure activity could resemble the incidence of the modern tennis game, with large percentage of violin-educated people regardless the social class or instruction level.

Only exception is the marketing aspect, sellers will always try to find techniques to sell their products at their best, hence building a realistic Mr Olympia contest show with extensive use of the techniques available at the time, and in spite of a definitive extinction of the dinosaur-like character of the actual bodybuilder could be one of the brilliant ideas of a marketing committee.

Creepy, but clever. I am curious if you find it arousing, as I just find it disturbing.

You are correct that the larger a muscle becomes the less the outer fibers contribute to the arms ability to produce force, this actually in theory makes the cross section of the muscle limitless, but the ability to lift weight finite, so there is hope for those of us with a hypermassive and immobile desires. The other engineering issue is that the higher angles tend to split the tendon to bone connection, which is why it is so common for large biceps to tear, the standard surgery for an athlete with a torn bicep produces a much stronger connection that can withstand the increased angle of connection.-- This part is real and actually happens, and I can definitely see a future where this is nearly universal, or is actually done preemptively. To be honest I look forward to being able to plan these things in advance with the orthopedic surgeon.

The idea of being able to 3d print specific tissues would be such a boon, It would be fantastic to go in and get a fresh meniscus grown into my knee, have a tear knit back together, and ( loving where this is going) have extra fibers added to muscle groups I am having trouble developing.

I don't think that the desire of men to develop their own size and strength will ever go away, as it is part of the primate social hierarchy. The de facto reduction reduction of the desire for strength and mass to dysmorphia (a pathology) is flatly insulting. The rise of bodybuilding itself reflects that our minds still seek this hierarchy of mass and power, even though physical strength has no practical value, and enforcing one's social status via physical force is a strongly enforced taboo in our culture. If I punch somebody in a bar, I can be charged with assault with a deadly weapon (or so I am told) simply based on my size. Half of me is turned on by this fact and half of me is ashamed of the glorification of the pathetic that has lead my society to this point.

So, Joxok, you have definitely written something thought provoking and cleaver, but evil and creepy. I also see one thing that is very true in this that is definitely real, the whole iron game, whether it be body building, strongman, powerlifting, Olympic lifting, or professional wrestling is predatory. The amount of work that goes into becoming massive and maintaining mass falls onto the athlete to provide, and support entirely on their own, a person gets a short period in the limelight and is then abandoned. "The Wrestler" was an excellent depiction of the syndrome.

So, thanks again. You made me think; You gave me new ideas, which I may use to write something that suits my own purposes, or perhaps will live on only in my mind; and you gave me a chance to vent a bit about a few things that are bothering me.

You hit the spot.

I'm sure that anyone living 200 years ago would say the same about the reality of our present time, in general about the political situation and the "evil" uses of modern technology, but also what some bodybuilders do in order to reach their goals would appear as creepy to a man living in 1800s... Not to mention the monstrous results, compared to an age when people rarely were taller than 1.70cm and far away from muscled... So my vision made you react like a man from 200 years ago would react to our reality.

I torn both my quads squatting 7 years ago, and more recently a bicep, the surgeon decided to put two anchors in the bone to fix the tendon so it would not break again, then after a partial tear of the other one and of the subscapularis I experienced a great motivational crash..l still training but he spark is gone, feel betrayed by my body.

The story is based on possible evolutions in science, biology, medicine and social topics...
Undoubtedly there will be a larger separation between who is into power sports and the rest of population, making a power lifter or a bodybuilder much much different from a common man that even if into fitness, would not embrace the full philosophy. I've learned that when financial interest becomes huge moral limits become extremely flexible, so for the sake of showbiz new "gladiators" can be built from real people that being at the margins of society will have nothing to loos and all to gain from becoming a bodybuilding hero, all I did is try to exacerbate all those distortions that I've seen growing in our society in the last 30 years and geometrically project them in the future, when the future layman will consider them an unavoidable sign of the times...
