Muscle builder as much as muscle lover

I'm assuming that if you're on this forum you're into muscle growth in others. But who here is also working to grow your own muscles?
Even if you're not the muscle-monster of your fantasies, if you've added and/or are in the process of adding muscle mass to your frame, consider yourself a "muscle builder".

For the record, I'm both a muscle builder and a muscle lover.

Tried to get any bit bigger, but alas, I gained nothing. So, I'm just a muscle lover, though that doesn't mean I don't hope that eventually science can bypass these annoying genetics of mine.

I doubt it is your genetics, dude. You are 23, and so your metabolism is in overdrive... which means its burning calories like crazy. You will have to eat like a pig in order to gain weight. Just wait until your turn 30 or 32. Gaining weight becomes easier. 90% of muscle growth is diet. Course, you gotta have the other 10% too -- the weight training -- and most guys THINK they know how to do that right, but don't actually.

Yes, I know this. Though I did try my failed attempt when I was 18 actually, not recently. I tried everything under the sun as I worked out; you name it, I tried it...except for 'roids. That was the "line" I wouldn't cross (plus the illegality thing).

I've always wanted to build myself up, not just worship somoene bigger than me. To me, it's partly about dominance. I want to be dominated, but I want them to work for it.

So right now, I'm building myself up. Only 255 right now, the goal is 300lbs of muscled beef.

Speaking as a former 120 pound 29 year old, it is true that your metabolism is in overdrive. You just gotta hit it and keep hitting it hard...the weights, eating, etc etc and it will happen..the weight and size will come.

Today I hit the scales at over 255 plus, and still hitting it hard....

And yes, gotta love that muscle whether you're a builder or a lover!

I did honestly try. Not for just a few days, or a month; I worked out for one long year. I gave up soon after I finished HS. With nothing to show, except a lot of money gone.

I'll have to "suggest" Balrog to put you into an intense training/eating routine now, to see what happens .

In my case I love ripped huge muscle in others and i'd like to grow myself. I'm getting some results at the gym but it's going slow. I'm patient, though

Hey, I gotta tell you, one year is not nearly enough as I have been at it for 20 years plus now. But I do know the feeling......been there. It can be disillusioning. But it is not impossible....just gotta plan and stick it out. You know the proverb "a journey of a thousand miles begins with one step". It's true....

Sometimes it simply takes patience as well, and I know it is hard to do with todays "gotta have it now" mindset of society today.

And it is always great to hear another success story here at MGS

Good luck and train hard!

I suppose I was impatient and more naive back then. Though nowadays, I do pride myself on my patience.

I'll give it some serious* thought. If I do choose to restart, I'll have to throw my younger bro outta my parents garage, so I can use our Bowflex.

*Amazing, I know. Me actually being serious.

Throw out? And what about being workout partners, switching places while the other rest and/or spot the other? It's another way of passing time with your bro and when you're older and can't, won't complain about wishing for have past more time with him when you had the time

Well, you can't really 'spot' on a Bowflex, it isn't free weights.

Besides, no one cares about that "brotherfy love" junk anymore.

I might have to drag him back though, he hasn't been using the Bowflex (and I can tell). If pullin on his ear(s) don't work, Balrog can always "convince" anyone, otherwise.

Hey I care about brotherly love! Love my Bro, and also have no problem kicking his ass when I need to!

And as far as kick ass, kick it in the gym if you want, if not, well you don't have to, there are those that play the game and those that sit in the stands and watch those that can.

I prefer to be in the trenches and getting huge!

I'm a builder and a muscle lover. Not as successful as I would like in the gym, but noticably larger than most, working on getting more "ripped" right now.

LOL!! You got it!

Got this in my email today from musclegains.com, and I couldn't have said it better....

"
Nothing angers me more than skinny guys who complain
about their inability to gain weight.

"Waaaaa (said in a whining baby voice ala Artie Lang and
Howard Stern), I have a really fast metabolism."

"Waaaaa, it's harder for me than most people to gain
weight."

"Waaaaa, I don't have the appetite to eat that much."

"Waaaaa, I have terrible genetics."

"Waaaaa, I don't have time to eat that much."

"Waaaaa, I have tried everything and still can't get bigger."

You know what I say to people who make those excuses?

"Give up.

Quit.

It's hopeless.

Stop going to the gym today and never even think about
picking up a weight again.

End your misery now and start something else because I
promise you that you will never get bigger.

There's not a shot in hell... and that's the honest truth.

You know why you will never get bigger and stronger?

Because you don't have the heart or the balls to do it. It's
that simple. And the sooner you realize it the sooner you
can move on and start doing something more productive
with your time.

You are a weak, lazy chump.

And you make me sick."

That's what I tell them...

I graduated high school weighing all of 147 pounds at six
feet tall. Eventually I got up to 231 pounds through proper
training and eating and an undying dedication to achieving
my goal.

I trained as hard as I could and ate when I didn't want to,
when it wasn't convenient and when I wasn't hungry.

I went to sleep early on nights I wanted to be out drinking
and partying.

I did whatever I had to do to achieve my goals and refused
to believe that my crappy genetics would hold me back.

Somewhere along the path I came down with tuberculosis
and nearly died. I spent a few weeks in the hospital and
six months on bed rest. I was on medication for a year
and when I returned to the gym could only bench press
the bar.

But I didn't let that stop me and picked up right where I
left off.

Over my fourteen years in the industry I have seen
numerous people achieve the same kind of results time and
time again. Many, far more impressive than mine.

My client and friend, Mike Schwalb gained 100 pounds of
muscle in the time he trained with me. I witnessed Mike
force down many a meal and come in to train on nights
when his friends were out having fun.

Another good friend, client and former training partner
of mine named Todd Coker gained over 120 pounds during
the time he trained with me, going from somewhere around
130 pounds to over 250.

My friend Jim Wendler has less than God like genetics and
even had a serious disease which he overcame to go to
squat 1000 pounds in competition and a body weight of
over 280 pounds.

Jim's teammate and friend Matt Rhodes went from 220
pounds at 6'4" to 313 pounds within the course of two
years because of his incredible commitment to eating and
training. I had dinner with Matt a few weeks ago and
personally watched him force feed himself long after he
was full. In fact we all laughed as the sweat dripped down
his head while he choked down another bite of chicken.
That's dedication.

I could literally list dozens and dozens of examples of
people I know personally (let alone the thousands of people
who overcame crappy genetics that I don't know) but I
think you get the point.

You know what those people all had in common?

Drive, desire, dedication and an iron will and commitment
to excellence.

That had heart and they had balls.

And most importantly, they never made excuses.

Do you?"

D

That is quite true I suppose, the only difference with me, was the simple fact that I simply can't take everything totally seriously. Everything is a big joke, with a "grain of salt" of seriously taken with it. Now mind ya'll that doesn't include situations where not being serious, would be a bad thing.

And that was quite the interesting little story that fellow sent you. I'd like to meet him sometime in my future, and stare longlingly at his hot bod, while he incoherently babbles about "training, diet" and other useless things related to actually growing muscle in this damnable "reality" we all have to deal with.

Thumbs up

Interesting survey results. Seems like there's a goodly number of muscle builders on this forum, at least among those who've done the survey.

Honestly, I had kind of predicted about a 50/50 split. But it makes sense that many who admire muscle growth in others would work for it themselves.

That's the spirit, MM (not...!)

I'm quite probably just as cynical as you are, but I still know that if I want to achieve something, I really have to go for it. Have fun failing, with an attitude like that.

Whoa whoa whoa! Back off a bit NJ. I've decided to start working out again, at the gym, doing everything I did before.

I'm hurt at that, honestly. There was no reason. I'm a goof, and that's all there is to it. I've learned to be a goof, and it's not very damn easy mind you, especially since I have Asperger's Syndrome. So "diss" my goofiness all you want, this is who I am, and I am going to get huge this times.

Good. Day.

Nothing wrong with being goofy; I wasn't talking about anything but your attitude towards training, and I'm glad you're back in the gym -- whatever did it. I was just trying to give you a little push there.

Even so, I'm very finicky about people who try to make me do things, even if this is the internet. Though I am quite power hungry, and don't feel a bit like a hypocrite, by doin that to other people.

I still ain't gonna post 'before' pics, mostly because I don't want to.

I suppose I should bring my little brother along to the gym. I'll throw him into a large bag, put him in the back of my car, and if he's still moving when I get there, I MIGHT let him join me. (I'm a cruel SoB, ain't I?)

Okay, one more time...... I had given up as I thought "hey, this goof isn't serious" but hey, here is my final "push". It doesn't matter one whit to me (I got mine), nor does it matter if you post pics or not. who cares?? Do it for you...you gotta want it for you. Someone telling you what to do, well ignore them, suck it up and just do what you need to do for you. Even goofs gotta grow up sometime....trust me!

As for the gym, no one can do it for you, but if you decide to gget around to it, just get from in front of this keyboard (like I'm about to do), and get your self-proclaimed "goofy" ass into the gym! (and I say that with the best intention) . You would be just the type I'd love to train in the gym, and trust me, you'd probably drool but there would be equal amounts of sweat, blood and tears when we were done, and boy, you'd grow!

You say you're gonna get huge this time... the gantlet has been thrown down. Time to walk the walk!

Good luck!

I'm not making you do things (that'd look entirely different, believe me); you've expressed that you'd like to get bigger, so I'm not trying to get you into something against your will. I just can't fucking stand it when people say "Oh I wish, Oh I wish" without getting up and trying to change their situation.

The guy above me is right, do it for yourself, because it's what you want. Not for me, I'll never be meaningful in your life anyway. But only you can really change 'you'. Others can only try, or perceive you to be something you may or may not be.

I'm not sorry for being mean.

Good luck.

Erm.... people... he already said that he was gonna do it. Just stop messing with him and leave him do it already! I don't know why, but it seems to me as if nobody is reading what he's posting. Even I can read the real thing under the goofy stuff.

Anyway, good luck, MM (or is it: good luck, theMM?) Any doubt you got in how to do things is, for sure, able to be solved here. There is so many experienced people here. And I have the suspect you already have some tips in you he he.

having been a skinny guy when growing up and having used the same answers as stated above i can tell you that to get size you have to eat, and train hard. and i mean eat. When i was a trainer i heard from clients i eat all the time , i eat lots of food . that maybe true or not but i found that once you look at the food they eat it's no suprise they don't gain weight. I found that 80% of gainig size( muscle ) is nutrition related and the rest is the gym. so if your looking to become bigger then learn your nutrition. if you need ideas hollar at me.
