Skinny guys supplement dilemma..

Hey guys,

Just started gyming six weeks ago, but seen some improvement already! I weighed 61kg when I started, and after gyming six days a week and taking supplements I have moved up to 64kg.

The problem I have is that I have also gained a little fat, especially abdominal fat. I suspect this is due to the supplements I am using. I have been taking creatine, as well as a mass gainer with 30g of protein and 48g of carbs per serving. Should I take something with less carbs? I am worried that if I do I will stop gaining muscle mass as well...

Your daily diet is even more important than what supplements you are eating. Stay away from fruit juices--most of them are mostly high fructose corn syrup, eat more lean protein, more complex carbs instead of sugars, and time your meals right. 5 to 6 meals a day is better than 3. How intense are your work-outs? If intensity does not match your diet then you will simply gain fat.

Pretty intense, I would say. Usually get my heart rate nice and high, am pretty sore the next day, that kind of thing! Being a vegeterian, its not always easy to get the lean protein right - part of the reason I am taking the sups. Also really struggling with 5 to 6 meals a day! Currently I eat as follows:

Breakfast:
1 piece of toast with peanut butter
1 cup of coffee
1 protein shake (30g protein 48g carbs)

Lunch:
300g vegetable bake/past/sub
1 coke

Afternoon:
1 protein shake

Supper:
360g risotto/pasta/vegetarian lasagne/pizza

After supper (23:00):
1 protein shake

Lunch is almost impossible to improve, as I eat at a cafeteria, unless I add to that 200g of french fries or something...

Dump the soda, have a milk or unsweetened iced tea instead. Dinner should be lower carb higher protein, breakfast is far too small have eggs, something higher protein peanut butter ok but high in sugar. Your entire diet is mostly carbs--up the protein lower the carbs a bit.

Just curious...what is your main goal, specifically.... not just "gain fat and lose muscle".

And how tall are you?

Judging by your diet you are not consuming nearly enough. Gotta get more calories in.....

Good luck and keep us posted!

I am 1.77m tall. I want to gain about 14 kilos - ambitious, I know! But I am dedicated and have enough time to do it in. I know I have to work on my diet - kinda difficult being a med student, hence my tendency to look for a solution in supplements, which are easier! I'm gonna increase breakfast though, and see what I can do about getting more protein at supper time!

Thanks for the encouragement.

Well, 14 kilos - 30 pounds is do-able, although it will take some time. So that would make your total weight... ?

Yes, one thing that will help immensely is to fall in love with your blender and thermos bottles! High calorie protein shakes would be the ticket for those extra calories. I have made all sorts of shakes containing, fruits, nuts, peanut butter, etc etc to help gain the extra calories and weight that I needed. When you are not eating, think of drinking a shake.....carry food and shakes with you through the day. Trust me, it will put the size on you. Of course there are some guys that are afraid to really pack on the weight for fear of getting fat.....as long as you are hitting those weights and cranking up the intensity you will not become a blob, and then once you have gotten up in weight, kick up the cardio!

Here is a link that makes for an interesting read. I read it many many years ago and even though many may read it and shake their heads, with me some of it stuck and made sense, and with that I managed to gain and gain the size that I wanted.

Keep us posted and grow BIG!

Heh. I also seem to be having this guy's problems. Granted, I'm just a Polo-Vegetarian, but I do seem to have the same issues.

Just been going with the Protein though myself. Haven't used any other suppliment.

To answer your question, pyro, the only thing I know of that slows down your metabolism is old age. :-P

WARNING: CYNICAL TIRADE!

The problem is that nearly every one of those get-fit-quick ads are designed to cater to people who are overweight. At least, that how it seems from the American standpoint. Many people here are among varying degrees of fat, from the "big-boned" to the morbidly obese and everything in-between. If your trying to lose fat, you have a wide variety of supplements and gizmos designed for that purpose. If you're already skinny and want to gain muscle, however, the advice you're given is either: a) lift heavy weights and eat everything in sight, or b) eat lots of protein and lift heavy weights. Either way you look at it, you will be moving lots of pounds (or kilos, depending on which side of the pond you're on).

Either way, 147, my advice to you is to ask someone who works at a health food store, like GNC.

Thanks

Thanks for all your advice guys :-) I will keep you updated through this thread!

Another question: having just finished a creatine cycle, is there something else I could be taking? At the moment I am just taking protein and carbs...

Thanks guys.
