Muscle Milk

hello, i just had a quick question to ask any of you who work out..

..if trying to build mass, when is it better to drink muscle milk? The product's instructions say to take a serving before working out, or after working out. i just wanted some input as to when it's better to drink it. I have been drinking it an hour-ish before working out, but i know that you lose a lot of important nutrients when working out, and it's best to refuel 30 to 45 minutes after working out, so would it be good to take a second serving of muscle milk after working out? or maybe just take whey protein or something?

any input would be greatly appreciated! thanks!

Personally, I love MM (and not just for 'that' particular reason either). I always drink it after my workouts, as before has never seemed to do myself much good. Though who knows, it might be better for you beforehand.

Post workout!

YOu should definitely save some for post workout, when your muscles need the nutrients! I've read many articles that say that the 45 minutes post workout are the most important time for your muscles to be nourished to help growth.

So, AFTER workout!

Wow, what a coincidence. One of my close friends tried Muscle Milk, and was telling me and some other friends about it, and how it gave him massive diarrhea. He was telling us how he took it an hour before he worked out, almost crapped himself, and then had to speed home. and than basically pooped on and off for 3-4 hours.

After some google-ing, he found out that some people can't digest something in Muscle Milk. It was a funny/disgusting story.

Muscle Milk - get the lactose free version

Sar,

Tell your friend to look for the version of Muscle Milk that does NOT have milk fats or milk solids in it. He probably has an allergy to lactose (very common in many people after about age 16 or so.) The lactose free version of Muscle Milk (and regular milk- buy "Acidopholus" brand - it has no lactose) is very digestible.

That was what I asked first, but the guy literally lives off breakfast cereal. Seriously, it's surprising to be at his apartment, and see anything other than some cereal and milk out. So He doens't think it has anything to do with the milk products in Muscle Milk.

Well....

..The fact that your friend "lives off breakfast cereal" doesn't mean that he couldn't have an allergy to dairy products. Some food allergies (or any allergies, for that matter) have a range of exposure that varies from person to person before the allergy kicks in. For instance, your friend could be one of those people who can eat 1,2, 3 bowls of cereal with milk, but cannot take any more dairy products without having a reaction.

Another example: I, personally can eat cereal with milk at breakfast and be fine. I can eat cheese and fruit at lunch and still be fine. At dinner, if I have cheese again, then, say, ice cream for dessert....

There is a "tipping point" to food allergies. You hit that intake point and it's
"Geronimo!"

...Food for thoght

Just my 2 cents...

I use the MM ready-made shakes before I go to the gym, or during my workout. I don't really like to eat in the morning, so if I workout in the morning on a weeked, the shake works just fine. Usually I work out in the evening just after work, so I have a MM shake also before that workout. I love the chocolate variety,

I find the best way to benefit from protein powders and weight gainers is to consistently drink weight gain shakes throughtout the day. I have gained the most when I drink protein shakes throughout the day, although the majority of my nutrition comes from good wholesome food.

BJ's Wholesale Club has it (chocolate) so Costco might...assuming since you have 7-11's you're in the US.

Don't have any BJ's Wholesale clubs around here anymore, there are a few Costco's but I'm not a member there. Do places like The Vitamin Shopp and GNC carry them?

Go online and order it--there are several sites, Bodybuilding.com has always been prompt and with good prices, GNC's prices are a bit high, or go to the manufacturers website and they probably have good prices as well.

I have always been one who has a very small build. I've always had a problem gaining weight. Taking muscle milk with whole milk has helped so much. There is a lot of controversy over the best time to use Muscle Milk. Here's a fact for you though: supplements affect everyone differently. I will list a few of the best ways to use Muscle Milk, and you should experiment with them to see what works best for you.

I use the bulk bag of muscle milk whey protein vanilla. I have a bullet blender with 12oz drink mugs.
Normally I get blueberries and/or cranberries frozen, and put about a cup of frozen berries, a generous tablespoon of lemon meringue flavored fish oil, which is slightly sweet, milk to cover the berries (which usually leaves exactly the space needed for the powder) add in the powder and fasten on the blender base, rinse off any leaks and run it until it wants more milk or wants stirred or is all ready to drink.

I've been doing this before working out but I suppose it'd also be good afterwards.

Lactose Intolerance is extremely variable and depends on a number of factors. I am somewhat lactose intolerant and can have some things as long as I do not "overload". I can drink regular milk in moderate quantities with no problem. If I were to eat processed Mac and cheese and then go for that glass of milk I will have to have my mail forwarded into the restroom for the next 3-5 hours. Some products containing milk solids or lactose have concentrations far above what normal milk will have. The "kid" uses Muscle Milk with zero problems. But, if we go out for dinner with him the trigger to start disaster is a pice of cheesecake for dessert. That when combined with the MM will set him off. Tell your friend to try the other version as has been suggested. Surprisingly I tried a glass of the stuff myself knowing I am somewhat lactose intolerant. I was able to get away with it, but several hours later I had a few mild indicators that looking at anything dairy for a short time would be a disaster. There is also a milk called "lactaid" and this can be purchased for just the muscle milk. If he is mixing with whole milk down to even 2% the lactose remains the same it is only the fat that is removed. [/COLOR]

Muscle Milk can serve as a meal replacement because it is high in calories. However, your body still needs fruits, vegetables, and healthy carbohydrates to function properly. Therefore, Muscle Milk will keep you going throughout the day if you do not have access to a regular meal, but it should not be used to replace multiple meals in one day.

Hi,
I do no think that there is a necessarily "best time". It's important to get sufficient protein and carbohydrate in shortly after your workout to promote maximal tissue uptake and repair, and milk is a great way to provide both. So, right after your workout would be a great time, but it's helpful to drink it any time throughout the day.
