Exclamation Simvastatin WARNING - Do Not Take This!

Please Read: Simvastatin Causes Serious Skelatal Muscle & Liver Damage!

This is the generic (cheap) cholesterol prescription med being doled-out by the thousands as a miracle cure for higher cholesterol. Please avoid these "statin" type medications at all cost! I was duped into "must take these" by my GP 4 months ago. I was in fantastic condition, perfect liver function, and no muscle problems. Many here know I eat well, train hard and do not juice.

Today I was diagnosed with rhabdomyolysis, a serious condition caused directly by SIMVASTATIN resulting in deterioration and damage to skelatal muscle. My liver function is totally fucked up, with some enzimes off the scale. During the past 4 weeks I have suffered from 2 joint injuries and a lumbar problem. Training weights dropped and I'm starting to lose size!!

Muscle pain, spasms and fatigue are damn near unbearable at times. My training is suffering drastically. Now I may have permanent liver or kidney damage and muscle loss, all because of this fucking drug, SIMVASTATIN.
This was supposed to be SAFE, especially in a low daily dosage (20mg). Fuck the greedy drug companies and sold-out doctors who push this shit!
Do not, DO NOT EVER take SIMVASTATIN. It can destroy your body FAST!

I want to thank you for posting this. Statin drugs in general are being shoved out by MD's to many who are having problems. Both my other half and I were prescribed statins. My other half was in horrific muscle pain within about 6 days of beginning to use these drugs. The pain was so severe that he had to take 3 days off of work. He quit the drugs and the pain was gone in about 3 days. He remained off the drugs for about 3 weeks. He was prescribed this crap by an MD so thinking that it had been coincidence he started them again. This time he had pain across his back and shoulders that was severe within 3 days. I was given statins by an MD when I lived in California. Within one week I felt like CRAP. I did not get the pain, but the liver tests were now showing marked abnormalities and because I have to take niacin for another medical condition, I stopped the usage of the statins immediately. It took 90 days for my liver functions to come back down. I am waiting for the trial lawyers to get on to this farce. There are people currently being prescribed these drugs who are presenting with cholesterol levels well below 200. The worst I have heard of was a guy being given statins with a cholesterol of 164.

You need to contact a trial lawyer immediately and you need to begin to search the internet for any class action claims taking place against this pharmaceutical company that made the Rx you were given. When that is finished I would see what I could do about claiming permanent disability and going after the crackpot MD.

If you have suffered permanent damage from this drug you need to make it VERY public!

Including yourself, I now know of no less than about 1 dozen people damaged and having problems long or short term by the use of statins.

Good Luck my friend and I hope that you are able to have a complete recovery.

Alternative to Cholesterol Lowering Drugs

Last year I had just over/borderline-high levels of cholesterol, and very low levels of good cholesterol. Today I have just under/borderline-below excellent levels of cholesterol, and my levels of good cholesterol are much improved as well.

My solution to the problem included these things:

1. Regular aerobic exercise
20 minutes minimum, 4-6 days per week, alternating every 1-2 minutes between moderate and intense.

2. Omega 3 supplement
These are NOT all the same. Some actually make the problem worse.
The best I have found is Norwegian Gold Ultimate Fish Oils http://vibrant-health.com/store/page80.html.

3. Take the "Anti-Foods" out of your diet
Cut out ALL fast foods and ALL Trans fats. Think about it: the preservative, once in your living body, will try to preserve it. NOT a good thing. Also avoid as much as possible any "foods" that contain preservatives or artificial ingredients, and reduce processed sugar and high fructose corn syrup intake down to rare (such as when you go to a birthday party or celebrate the holidays with your family). There are some excellent alternatives to processed sugars these days.

4. Eat a healthy diet, with a strong emphasis on RAW, live foods.
These life-giving foods promote better overall health in profound ways. For example: I used to get sick at least once a year, sometimes as much as three times in a year. I have not been sick for five years, since beginning my current diet.

One last note: in my opinion, pills in general are designed to mask or alleviate a problem that is primarily caused by our not living in ways that nature intended. Though I don't subscribe to the "no pills" philosophy, I prefer to take natural steps to solve any medical problem first, whenever possible.

This was reported in the British news media this morning

and was covered on Sky News, BBC News and EuroNews

The statin drugs prescribed to millions of people to lower cholesterol may cause some unexpected side effects, which doctors should watch out for, researchers warn. But the study confirms that the drugs work well for preventing heart attacks and strokes.

Someone really failed on their spamming today. Usually these sorts of posts try to convince others to buy something, not the other way round

Well, I wouldn't call this spam. It is however a rare side effect of statins. I'm sorry this happened to you but for the majority of people.. it doesn't. Your doctor should have told you to stop taking Simvastin if you noticed any muscle pain or change in the color of your urine.

The trade off is that if you have life threatening cholesterol and eventually have a stroke and or heart attack. I would take statins long enough to lower cholesterol and then try diet control as another poster suggested (not if you have rhabdo obviously you need to stop statins).

Exclamation Recovery Update: Simvastatin Severe Reaction

It's been about 10 weeks since my original warning post. Thanks to all who have been encouraging thru recovery. Unfortunately, after things appeared to be turning around, I am experiencing new side effects from Rhabdomyolysis (even tho I've been off Simvastatin for almost 3 months). Although I was diagnosed early and taken off the statins, I did suffer injuries to a knee and a rotator-cuff due to muscle loss. The knee is coming around, but the shoulder developed complications, something called adhesive capsulitis (otherwise known as "frozen shoulder"). A shot of cortisone seemed to help for a few weeks, however it just masked the pain. I pushed a little too hard and tore it. Currently dealing with SEVERE shoulder pain (yes, I gave in to prescription narcotics on Friday) and anticipating need for arthroscopic shoulder surgery. Medical bills are mounting up as I continue to need blood tests, physical therapy, orthopedic specialists, etc. My weight still continues to drop and additional muscle loss is obvious. People treat me like this is MY fault, I have not found a class-action lawsuit and my health insurance is maxed-out. The nightmare continues. I've been doing my best to recover and work through this, but starting to lose hope. Training is one of the last things I have left that I really enjoy -- this is tearing me apart.

If anyone is aware of class-action lawsuit for Simvastatin, please send me a private message. I refuse to give up on recovering from this. Thanks.

I think that the question is not that statins are always bad for everyone, but the question is more that MD's hand these things out like they were candy and many do NOT follow up on the patient demanding blood testing within two weeks of beginning treatment, they wait until the patient is in trouble.

The idea with many medical conditions is to first do everything you can to correct the abnormality as best you can using more conventional methods and THEN go to the drugs if the other things fail. The idea of passing out statins to some individual who is gobbling down greasy fast food by the basketfull and making zero life changes is a total waste of time because the drugs will in a case like that be as dangerous as the condition.

This is again a situation where we want "instant cure" for a problem caused in many cases by a really bad diet.

I am absolutely against statins in the way that they are presently being Rx'd. My other half and I both had different MD's and had the same idiotic result from mis-prescribing.

I have since changed my diet a great deal eliminating red meat completely and added in slowly more and more exercise. I will over time incorporate more and more slowly to reduce problems. In physics there is an old saying about a reaction creating an equal and opposite reaction. This can also be true in medicine and if statins back up on you, the results can be horrific as you can see. I know multiple individuals who had bad experiences with statins.

I am myself looking for a class action on this one but have not as yet found one. This is surprising because I have known many who have had these reactions from statin drugs.

The FDA is definitely not our friends in any manner.

They gave us Accutane which has now been shown to result in major damage to the digestive tract and major illness for a lifetime. We have been given diet drugs which have resulted in death. We have been given arthritis drugs and psoraisis drugs which can cause non-hodgkins lymphoma cancer and yet they are going to protect us and make certain that we men never get our hormones replaced to the best of their ability. They have OK'd oral diabetic medications that can cause massive weight gain making the diabetes worse and bringing on other conditions from the obesity. They have approved the usage of some anti-psychotic drugs which can also cause massive weight gain and can cause heart failure if the patient is not monitored carefully and in the HMO world nobody does.

Guys, the main point is when your MD gives you a new Rx for something make dead certain that you have had counseling and that the MD in question has done proper and sufficient testing to make certain that what you have been given is absolutely necessary and is for you going to prevent disaster.
Also make dead certain that you are monitored for the potential side effects and that if they do not do so that you request a change in MD's. Your life can depend on it.
