The "Thank You" button

Hello all,

This is mildly off topic (or at least in the same vein as the Story Criticisms thread), but our wonderful host fleXodus has installed a "Thank You" button! See: http://www.musclegrowth.org/forum/sh...ad.php?t=27301

For those who've enjoyed the stories here for so many years (I know I have), please consider showing your appreciation with a simple click. The button is labelled "Thank You" and sits on the lower right of every post. It's designed to help show your appreciation for a post or story without taking any extra time or effort to post a reply.

If you still want to provide invaluable feedback with words, please do! But for those who like to read silently (or, I don't know, have a ball gag in their mouths), please show your support with a click. Authors love hearing that their work is appreciated. It may even spur more posting of the type of stories people "thank you" the most!

If your still not convinced of the value of the "Thank You" button, well, then sit silently still and hope that authors care about you more than you care about them because, well, not bothering to click a button is pretty silly.

Just my two cents!

- J

I've got to agree, the thank you button is pretty awesome. Now that you can show your appreciation to an author without bothering to type out a comment, there really isn't any reason to not do so.

I like it, and it's something which is vastly, vastly better than making everyone choose between posting "me too" or saying nothing, but could it be altered so that by default only the count of "thank you"s and/or the most recent ones (or earliest ones) show up, and you have to click to show the rest? As you can see from that first post, when the list of people gets long, it starts to take up more space than the actual post!

I thought this was going to be a story about how whenever a forum member receives a "Thank You" he grows a little bigger. How's THAT for a story idea?

Totally agree. I love the "Thank You" but I expect some users like the anonymity of a "tally" more than a "list". Like the "Like" button on YT or Facebook. It saves room and people who are more shy won't necessarily worry about "being that guy that thanks everyone"...Silly but, Just a thought.

Its a nice backrub but I do think it needs to be condensed better, they honestly irritate me how much a portion they take up on a page.

I agree. It is a bit silly. I dislike the impersonal aspect of the "thank you" button, I but I guess it's way better than nothing - especially for authors who need da little boost.

I personally like it as is...most of the posters in this thread are people that are somewhat regular posters. I've seen names in the "thank you" area that I've never seen contribute before and I think that's GREAT! If they're worried about "anonymity", they're not even gonna hit the "thank you" button so that's not an issue to me and I don't mind the extra space if it's showing support for a post. This way, at least there's some affirmative acknowledgement of the post...I've chatted with more than a few people that dont post because they don't want to be parrots to previous posts in threads and they don't have anything different to say.

"THANK YOU" Flexodus!!!

Xyggurat will become famous soon enough
Just getting back to this discussion, I think it's a little silly to assume that people will somehow stop commenting just because they have a convenient way to say "thank you" with a button click. My experience with readers is that they usually either comment to let a writer know what they like about a story, what they don't, or how they would like for it to proceed (in elaborate detail.)

We've had a few months now of the button and it doesn't look to me like the average number of comments has dropped on posts. In fact, I feel like it's galvanized some people into commenting more often. If anything, I'm pleased with the button because it's showing me that people still care if I write or not. I don't know if other authors feel similarly, but I get a warm fuzzy feeling inside when I see that at least some percentage of the people reading my work are taking the time to say "thanks."

-X-

P.S. And that, friends, is how you necromance a thread!

just want to add, and I've heard that from others: all content creators here are rewarded ONLY by comments and appreciation of what we do. It always amazes me, since it has been a few months already that this button got installed, that people can't even be bothered for a click/

I for one appreciate views, because it means someone's actually read what I wrote, and obviously they weren't majorly affronted since they didn't criticize me.... But that's just me.
I love "Thank You!"s as much as the next person, but I love posts even more. Who cares if you're parroting the person above you? Go for it. Being willing to just type "I like dis." makes my day, and I think it makes many other writers' day as well.

Also, THREAD NECRO WOOP WOOP WOOP

To me the Thank You button is annoying. It creates often very long lines that someone browsing has to scroll thru.

You could always show your gratitude for a particular post by simply tapping out a quick reply.
Sorry to be the nay-sayer esp since everyone else seems to love it.
