Dress shirts

Went out today looking for a nice white dress shirt and ran into a couple problems. I want a nice fitted dress shirt to show off my physique but either my arms are too big or I go up a size and the shirt gets too long and boxy.

Then I went to the big and tall store and all those clothes are for giants. The shirts there fit in the shoulders an arms but are ridiculously long, and the chest pocket is down on my stomach.

Have any of you solved this problem for yourselves? Do I need to start having my shirts custom made?

It would be cheaper to get a shirt with good fitting sleeves & have the body taken in at the local dry cleaners.

That's what I do I get them for the upper body and just get it tailored there or a men's clothing store. It's cheap and way worth it

The problem with Big and Tall stores is that their clothes should be labeled
Tall and Fat. Bodybuilder physiques are best served by finding a tailor that can make custom made shirts, if you live in a large metropolitan area you should be able to find a tailer who can make a shirt to your measurements, its more expensive but worth it.

I could get the body taken in once I have a good fit in the sleeves, but the shirts end up being really long. (I don't think tailor's can fix that, but not positive).

I have worked retail, and one place I worked next to had a fabulous tailor on hand that hated her job, so she hung out in our store a lot. Long story short, taking clothes in is cheaper than letting them out (especially if there isn't enough fabric), small alterations are easy, re-cutting is where it gets messy. Messy = pricey, easy = cheap. I say, go to Ross (or another store with better quality at lower prices) and get the best fit you can. If you really hate it, then get it altered. When you do find a shirt you like, buy 3. Enough to wear, but not so much that you will be stuck with them when you are twice your current size... If none of the above helps, then go to a store like Men's Warehouse/JC Penny/Nordstrom/etc where they sell clothes & have on-site alterations.

Yes, I've been looking for a fitted shirt, but the arms are always too tight. I end up having to get a regular fit for the arm girth but then the body isn't fitted the way I want. I have really wide shoulders and want to show my taper. (my arms are 19 inches)

Well man I can attest to the notion it's only going to get worst as you keep growing, my arms are 20.5 and I have to go get a jacket made now. Due to my drastic shoulder to waist ratio I don't know how the pros do it. (61 inch shoulders to 36 inch waist), shoulders may be bigger that was 10 lbs ago but the waist was from 2 days ago due to a pant's problem where they split.

That's just another issue with a 36 inch waist I wear a 40 inch waist jeans because the legs and ass give me enough room that 36s just don't.

HotBodz

This company does not sell standard white collar dress shirts like you wear with a suit and tie, but if you go for other darker colors you may find what you are looking for here, to some degree:

http://www.hotbodz.com/category-s/44.htm

Most of the shirts they sell in this category are meant for cocktail parties and other formal social events, not for regular business attire. But you might find something you like.

High end stores tend to have more size selection. Try Nordstrom's.
I found tailoring to be outrageously expensive.

Business short sleeve are VERY hard to find in any good color /pattern selection.

Thanks man! That style is exactly what I'm looking for, big enough shoulders and arms, but tapered to the waist and not too long so I can wear it untucked.

Woot, woot! You've officially doubled your size now, right? Good work! (And good luck with finals!)

I envy you your problem! Thomas Pink, shirtmakers of Jermyn St, London, England have an American operation. You could try them with your measurements. There are bespoke shirt-makers in London. Worth a try bog boy!

Hotbodz is great, but sizing is extremely variable from shirt to shirt there. Be willing to experiment. And Nordstroms Fitted Shirts seem to wok well for me...20" arms and 37 waist.
