A lot of the iconography associated with Satan was borrowed from Pan and the satyrs of classical mythology. Since there was a strong strain of nature-hate in early Christianity, it was natural for them to portray the Devil using figures that stood for lust and the natural world.

Kind of strange how people simultaneously claim to believe that there's a superhumanly clever supernatural being who wants to make people evil and miserable, but also that this being uses a recognizable, inhuman appearance. If I believed in such a being, I would believe that it spent its time running religions, since that's not only the best spot to make people do evil while being unrepentant but also the most obvious source of human misery throughout history. (Heck, if there were really a superhuman demonic being, it could potentially be a series of popes, Fred Phelps, Pat Robinson, Jerry Falwell, the Ayatollah Khomeini, Ovadia Yosef, and any number of others simultaneously.)

But more to the point: Rent did a NSFW image along these lines for Halloween this year.

Someone once said, "With or without religion, you will have good people doing good, and bad people doing bad, but for good people to do bad, that requires religion." For it to be more accurate, it should say "... For good people to do bad requires fundamentalist religion." Funny thing is, no religious person I've ever met considers himself to be a fundamentalist, even when they obviously are. I take that to mean that everyone accepts that fundamentalism is a bad thing, and yet they exists.

I like to study religions because they are fascinating, but I have no use for them myself.

. The fact that an educated, intelligent person can believe such obvious nonsense is nearly endlessly entertaining to me.
