Hot, maybe, but what they are currently doing in that country wrt gays and in the Ukraine with Putin's little hissy fit, makes me so pissed off I can hardly appreciate a hot russian.

...and bodybuilding is a "newish" trend over there with all the social changes occurring since the fall of the USSR. Here in the U.S. bodybuilding is fairly "mainstream" to the point that it is almost unpopular again. It's a lot of work (most people are lazy) and the steroid myths ("ALL" bodybuilders "MUST" be on steroids) are working against bodybuilding.

In these clips, it's clearly a propaganda story.

A bodybuilder in Russia must really stand out, since most of the population does not have access to the resources it takes to get that big.

It's sort of a status symbol, but it is also a sign of "difference" from the majority of Russians. From a propaganda standpoint, I'm sure it's easier to imply that opponents to Putin are "thugs" and "criminals" if you show pictures of a hugely built bodybuilder all in black. It is very intimidating and scary. By implicit comparison, the "devil you know" i.e. Putin, seems normal and regular by comparison. It's all a mind game to control people's perceptions.

Not to argue with Mdlftr but I wish bbing was "mainstream" here in USA.
It's still very much on the fringes I'd say.
More people are into fitness and trying to stay in shape but that's a far cry from bbing.

I long for the day when 1 outa every 3 guys had 18 inch arms.
