I hung out with many while stationed in Wiesbaden. I just moved away from there a few weeks ago. Not many bodybuilders, but the ones around are absolutely HUGE... but you know this since you live in Germany.

hehe, i must confess that i've seen only a very few real huge bodybuilders in real life. There are much less around than you might think, especially where I live :/
The only HUGE guys I've ever seen have been on the FiBo in Essen.

I've always found Sagat quite unattractive and strange, mainly because of the weird "head tattoo." So, his behavior in that pic doesn't suprise me at all.

Suma, you have to remember the time period when that performance happened. Bodybuilding was still quite popular and the competitors were pretty much celebrities, especially Mike Mentzer. Back then, it wasn't considered homoerotic to pose in front of people because Arnold and Lou pretty much made it acceptable.

Mentzer was controversial anyway because of his personality, but did anyone get the impression that he was batting for our team in a way?

Maybe he was a fan of the band, but he was a little too friendly. If I lived in that time though, Mike would have been a huge fantasy of mine because his body was GORGEOUS.

No, I'm welll aware of the era in which this was filmed. But it still strikes me as somewhat odd for a video or scene for longer movie.

I'd disagree somewhat that bbing was very popular back then. I'd say that bbing has never enjoyed universal appeal, and besides the So Cal Venice Beach crowd, bbing is still and then very much sub-culture.

Since this was filmed the week after the 1980 Olympia fiasco, where Arnold was handed the Mr. Olympia trophy over several other more deserving competitors, I suspect this was an attempt to broaden Mentzer's appeal beyond bodybuilding.

I suspect he did not get much direction, other than something like, "Go out there on stage and look imposing among those rocker weenies. Do some comparisons and show how scrawny and out of shape they are next to you."

Well, he did that. However, the scene doesn't play quite right. When Mentzer takes the one guy's biker hat and wears it, that comes off somewhat like the school yard bully taking advantage of the little kids.

It's an early attempt at trying to broaden a bodybuilder's appeal. If Mentzer had stayed in shape and seriously pursued an acting career, and had received good direction, there's no telling where he could have gone! He could certainly do the "Jersey shore" "Philadelphia guido" "Macho man" look! I suspect that his personality was not extraverted enough to really carry that off.

Regardless, he is remembered today as an impressive bodybuilder, a thinking man whose training philosophies continue to attract legions of fans and a man who continues to inspire, even 10 years after his death!

Not bad for a guy who never won Mr. Olympia!
(that was sarcasm in the last bit, in case anyone missed it!)

I think that's the best point here,someone directed the video, not Mike Mentzer. This does not make him weird. He is just doing what the director/videographer told him to do.
